I hadn't even heard of an Amish auction in Calera. I knew you had to watch for them on the way to Ada on Hwy 78 and occasionally you see a few in Walmart. But I didn't know any were closer.

Grace, why does everyone else know what's happening right here under our noses that we don't know about?

So where exactly is it in Calera? Where do you find out which days it is on?

Hey, Q, I was trying to link to a site where a guy built a cheap hand held plucker from a drill that uses the bungy fingers I was talking about but the site is down, so I just copied a picture from Google's cached site...

Here is the original site if it ever comes back up...

NA NA and PNB thanks, i didnt relize he sold broiler chicks right there. Would be alot cheaper to buy directly from him than ordering and paying shipping plus about 1.30 extra per chick. PNB they do grow slower than the cornish crosses (black/red broilers). There suppose to have less problems with than the faster growing cornishX. Ideal also has a special on the white cornish at around 1$ a piece at 25 ordered + shipping. Ill see what the wife thinks and may call Raymond tommarow and see when he gets more chicks in. As to what I feed, I feed the Dumor 16% layer from TSC at around 10$ a bag. They now carry Purina Layena at like either 10.99 or 11.99 a bag but its crumbles and I always thought i had less waste with pellets. In the winter I feed alot of corn especialy in the evening to increase body heat. Right now im cutting layer/scratch grains 50/50. Na Na do you know if the Co Op sells ls 50? I gotta run to town in the morning to take Angel to her first day back in school so I may just run in there and check.

Family stuff mainly. Grilled some Salmon for dinner. I got on here to see what I was missing but now I can't keep my eyes open. Something kept me up too late on Saturday and I haven't caught up.
How are you tonight?

Well the staple gun that I bought for attaching the hardware cloth to the coop was a POS, so I returned it. J is going to excavate in his garage to find his, and finish attaching the wire. Poor chickens, living in a (huge) dog crate in the middle of my kitchen has GOT to be tough

Just put up with Halloween door cling, fixin' to hang up the spider web (I almost said "chicken web", what's up with that!?) and hang the spiders from it. I'm a late or never decorator... I almost always wait until the week before, slap stuff up, then take it down the day after. I'm hoping to be better about Thanksgiving, but every year I make the same goals... and every year I fail on follow-through

The cat is NOT happy about the door cling... now he can't stand on his back legs and look out the door. Poor kitty.

eta: The spiderweb is up, the spiders are attached, and I'm going to bed. Night all!

I guess I'm the only one up this late. Think I caught hubby's bug; spent the whole evening sleeping on the couch. Oh but not before making the hour commute to Norman to go to class, and then realizing that I'd left my parking permit at home. So I turned around and came home.

I moved all my chickens outside today for the first time. The Marans have been out there a while, but the EE's have not. Hopefully the Silkie will help keep them warm, as she has been with them inside since I got her. I'm so worried about my babies.

Good Morning All.

Boy the Okie thread was quite last night! Not much going on here but rain! I went to bed early last night and I am up early this morning.

Buster thank you for the picture with the website. I had found the video on utube but couldn't figure out what or how it was made. I just want it for reference.....being so close to Gideon and they only charge 1.50 or so process.

Good morning Okies! I think my last hatch is complete. I only ended up with 3 guineas. Which is okay. My husband is not a guinea lover. lol I am toying with the idea of shutting the incubator down, but then I am really wanting to get some Serama eggs to try...

Where will you find Serama eggs? I saw some on BYC a few weeks ago when I was looking at the new auction system. Those are expensive bird eggs!

I plan to shut my incubator off as soon as the duck eggs I put in there yesterday hatch or don't hatch. Yeah, right

Well, Henny, when I walk through auction after auction after auction and don't see a single breed I want except the turkeys, I guess my heart is trying to tell me something. I see pretty little birds and think, "Why?"

And adding other breeds of turkeys is a no-starter because my turks are fully free ranged, and the last thing I want is to mix my Bourbon Reds' genetics with anything.

When I noticed that about the auctions, I started thinking about our goal of a simple, self-sufficient lifestyle. That basically comes down to raising birds for eggs and for the table. That's pretty much it. Keeping a parent meat flock separate from an egg flock is just too complicated to justify given those goals. I was going to have to create a whole 'nother chicken house and yard for the meat flock, and then what do I do with the Cornish eggs during the off-season?

Oh, I realize the importance of beauty on a farm, but these Cornish and Bourbon Reds are some pretty birds. Plus I have my ducks for that. They are my little beauties.

As to loving my birds, the only one I can say I really love is my bud, the Buff Oprington roo, and he is headed for the block next weekend. I just can't see trusting his future to anyone else. Everybody else is headed for the auction house.
