Cool! Our next project will be building portable pens(makes for less clean up) for the banty and standard breeds. They will have electric for lights and heaters that I can plug in or hide the plug when not in use.

WOW !!!! Stephanie you guy's are really gettin after it, that's alot of hatching but you guy's ship almost all of them off don't you ??. Carl mentioned your customer base is really solid.

Well, we dont have alot of customers yet, but I already have back orders on all my wyandotte breeds and cant fill all the orders for the old english either.

Good point Stephanie, I do also want some large tractors I think I want to move mine around with the real tractor for ease. I have looked at those Salatin tractors everybody raves about, and I don't think they are very good for real heavy use. I think this Salatin character is a hack, so many people Townies ( that have moved to the country ) thinks this guy is some sort of Dali Lama of the chicken world, personaly he reminds me of Bernie Maddof hehehehe.

I dont know who you are talking about.... you will have to show me these tractors some time. What we plan on building is a basic A frame contruction. For the banties it will be a 4'h x 4'w' x 12'L with 4' of the length being the coop area and the other 8' being the run. then for the standards basically double the measurements and make the run detachable put the thing on flip down casters for easy moving.

My brown leghorn is the only one I can really tell is not laying - I haven't had a white egg in Quite Some Time. I figure I've been lucky that the cold weather and shorter days haven't affected my flock too much as yet, although I've noticed signs that a couple of them are about to molt (if we were in the UK I'd have typed 'moult'), so maybe they'll slack off soon. I did put a 60W daylight bulb in their coop on a timer - it comes on at 5:00 a.m. and goes off at 7:30 when the sun comes up. They wake up, hit the feeder and get to work! Oh, and I hold regular company meetings to stress the importance of keeping production up in these hard times and to recognize top performers.

I get anywhere from 8 to 18 eggs a day. Sometimes more white and sometimes more brown.

Hi joshbob - good for you on the eggs - how many hens do you have? And I saw that you received some Ideal chicks this month - Merry Christmas to you - what kind did you get? By the way, I got a white egg day before yesterday!

Well I did chores yesterday in hopes of watching some good football games today while the girls do some last minute shopping for gift's and grocery's. so pretty much a nice lazy day for me.

Aren't those the best days! I always feel like I'm in the lap of luxury whenever I have a day with nothing to do but nap & watch TV. Which reminds me - don't have Wild Kingdom on while your birds are free-ranging right outside the window - I was running around looking for whatever was making all the ruckus of weird scared fowl calls, until I realized it was just the TV.

the waddles on the females are smaller than the waddles of the males. The waddles on the males tend to curve inward. Also, although the females can imitate the click click click sound of the males, in addition to their "buckwheat, buckwheat" sound, the males can only make the click click click sound - that reminds me of a moter that can't quite get started.

I have been kicking around an idea where the tractor is built with large seperate pens that can be towed in and out of a real big strong covered run adjacent to the coops to be secured during the night in and then tow the out to pasture in the morning. That would solve my preditor problems and feed bill and clean up time. I am thinking about something the size of maybe 30'-40' long and 12' wide and 3' high or higher. I have a stack of 20'x 2" drill stem pipe that will serve as the frame, weld it together and install some bomb proof fencing on it, along with a tow hitch and wheels that can be adjusted for height and travel and it should work great.
