One of the pros of AI is that the females and males can still be shown/exhibited and not have feathers trimmed or missing/broken feathers on their head, neck, saddle areas.

Me, I just wouldn't show the brood stock.

I'm not a fan of AI either.

I just tend to think of AI as a weakness. Apparently there are some breeds that can't breed on their own and AI is necessary (I don't keep up with which ones are/aren't) but then again I have to wonder... if we're breeding them to such a standard that they can't reproduce without assistance, that really can't be a *good* thing.

Wayne, I'm down to 4 Asil chicks that hatched from the 6 eggs. I found one nearly dead along with a dead silkie chick in the brooder so I've decided to put LS-50 in the drinking water for a week so that no other chicks die. Anyway, I am going to save those chicks and give them back to you when you visit Oklahoma again.

Gosh, I need some time to read all the posts since I've been off for a few days. Hopefully I get lots of free time at work this afternoon. Now Gerald and I had better go feed everything & figure out what to do with 2 goats before we have to go to work. Poor goats are still in a pen in the back of the truck since we didn't get home 'til late last night.

Good Morning fellow Okies,

I finally got my computer away from the kids and can get a second on here. I had to boot them outside to play for a bit. I am extremely behind on this board, since I hardly was able to get on this weekend and then didn't read any yesterday. So what has been going on, anybody want to catch me up?

Kate

P.s. Just looked and I am over 30 pages behind, whew you guys have been a talkin.

Ooops also forgot to mention, we have three baby chicks that have hatched so far from the massacre. Yeah! Two look like they are probably silkie/cochin mix and the other I am pretty certain is a pure D'Uccle. I guess we will know more later when they grow up. I think one of the eggs is not going to make it (seems to be no movement), but I am leaving it in for now and we will see what happens. However, I believe the rest of the eggs that we added to the massacre bunch should hatch tonight or tomorrow or the next day.

The issue isn't the standard itself, but the individual breeder's interpretation of the standard. Some tend to breed more for aesthetics than functionality, which is where you have the split between "production" lines and "exhibition" lines in certain breeds. There can be a happy medium, it just takes longer to get there than if you breed for certain traits only (i.e. egg production vs. feather pattern).

If a breed is supposed to be "duel purpose" then, in my opinion, it needs to be maintained with that in mind and not just be pretty birds from which you might get a couple of eggs a week.

Morning OKes

What a long week so far... yesterday had to take my mom to the docs.... It was like getting teeth drilled with no novacaine....I took her out to the reservoir to see the geese and listen to them honk. She seemed to like that, but she likes nothing else in this ole world....Her pain meds aren't cutting it anymore and she's up to 2 Lortab every 4-6 hrs. Then on top of it she won't eat anything...I told her with that much narcotic she had to eat or she was gonna get in a catch 22. She says she hates the food there...I told her she would hate the tube more. So she is really weak and shaky.... then she keeps wanting clothes so I am hacking my lungs out buying clothes for her that are all wrong for some reason or other.... So I gotta keep taking them back.

Can't believe it's almost Christmas.... seems like yesterday I was fighting 115 degrees. The lousy NWS said we were really going to get some snow... this morning they have taken it all out of the forecast. Why don't they shut the h3ll up until they know?

I can't get eggs to my seller fast enough...one lady said that she needs 18 egg yolks for a recipe...I'm like where are these people in the summer....? I told the guy the hens don't come with a hand crank.

I am excited about maybe playing at the church.... haven't been in a band in 5 years!!!

Wow! Some people should not have a hammer or a screw driver or any tool and take on any handy job. At least not without supervision! Our house in Dallas we found all sorts of things wrong, but of course not until after you are living in it do you find many of the things. One huge problem we had was electricity. Apparently, they did some remodeling and spliced the electrical cord and it was shorting out in our walls, we didn't find this out until about 6 months of living in the house. Every other week or so I would come home and the clocks would be all reset like we had had an electrical surge or something. I thought for a long time it was something that they were doing in the neighborhood or area. So I didn't even pay much attention to it. Until one day we came home and had no electricity in half of our kitchen, the half where the fridge was plugged in. So we had to have a big orange electrical cord going from the Living room to the kitchen to keep our fridge running, until we could get somebody in there to fix it. So when they came and fixed it, that is when we found out that when they did the remodeling in the kitchen they did all the electrical wiring wrong and had also spliced right through the cord. So we had sparks going off in our walls and our house could have burned down to the ground. When the electrician told me this I was very upset, but then it also made me remember some things that had happened at our signing.

When we bought the house and signed our life away, the previous owner wouldn't give us our keys for three days. He wanted to wait until his realtor (whom was his sister), was back in town and said it was ok, bcs quote his words 'What if the house burned down, then he did not want to be responsible'. I am hoping that was coincidence, but at the same time it really made me wonder. Especially, since after we finally did get our keys to a house we owned for three days and were not allowed to move into, we started moving in (in the middle of the night). The next morning, I wake up to noises downstairs. I am 4 months pregnos at this time, but I scurry down the stairs to find this strange man in our house. The previous owner still had keys and was showing up to come and get things from the house that he still had not retrieved. I could not believe it, even after not letting us have the keys for three days after signing, he still had not gotten his crap out of the house and was their now trespassing and walking into our house, while we were asleep!

Anyways, I am not sure what my point is except there are some real idiots out there that have no business doing carpenter work. And even after having a house examiner (can't think what they are called right off hand) to point out all the bad things, they don't always catch everything. There were many other things we found along the way, but that was the worst thing of all of it. They also covered up a leak in the back porch, which didn't show up until the rainy season the next year. Oh, and a hole in the wall in one of the bathrooms, they just took drywall tape covered the hole and painted it, without even using puddy to fill in the hole or anything. These are just a few of the idiot things they did or shortcuts they took.

What does the doctor have to say about your cough? It sounds like you need some antibiotics, homemade cough syrup and some sleep.

i can watch those guineas all day, they are so funny, and pretty tame, they will come when called and follow me around- i can even go right up to them, they aren't pets like the chickens, but move in their own little reality- they are really odd little things...
