Thanks Henny. That's about what I was thinking. A few years ago I had a woman tell me she'd give me .75 cause she could get them at Wal Mart for that. Told her she should buy her eggs at Wal Mart then. Honestly, I'll feed them to my dogs first. I give some away to family and close friends. But if I can offset the cost of feed a little then why not.

I sell mine for $2.50 a dozen and no one complains about the price or they don't seek to buy them a second time. I tried selling them this spring for $3.50 a dozen, since they are $4 per dozen at the Farmer's market. Didn't get many buyers at that price.

When I have more than my regular buyers need, I give them away to the neighbors and friends rather than discount the price. People don't seem to appreciate the "country eggs" as being better than "store bought" unless there is somewhat of a premium price for them. If folks want to buy them at Wal-mart because they are cheaper there - be my guest. I downsized my laying hens last year because of that mind set and because I really don't have time to actively "market" my eggs. My regular customers however, tell me how much they appreciate the difference in flavor.

I just like being outside late at night in good weather, because it is peaceful.

Am I the only person watching the weather like a little kid waiting for Santa???

I need some serious and quick help!

Picked up a little hen I just got at Shawnee (so I don't know her normal actions) and noticed her abdomen seems to be swollen. She's been acting just fine, eating, drinking, moving around, alert. Feeling the abdomen a little, it feels "gritty" like maybe an egg has broken in there. Checking her again in a few minutes, there seems to be so much, maybe two eggs? I've never had this problem before so am trying to remember what others have advised. Plus, I'm not absolutely positive that's what is going on.

I know one of the experts on another forum highly recommends Calciboost for a hen that's eggbound. Of course, I don't have any, but I think I remember crushing Tums and giving it to them. I've given her about half a Tums dissolved in water now, and I've give her "sitz" bath in very warm water with a lot of Epsom Salts added. I thought I had some soluable Terramycin, but am having problems finding it. I do have some slightly out of date Tylan 50 that I've kept in the refrigerator, but it is injectible, and I really don't know if I should try it.

Does anyone have any experience or ideas? I'm going to put in a quick SOS to Dr. Les also.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Betsy- my duccle was eggbound this week, gave her a warm bath, the recommendation is half an hour at least, maybe a heating pad might work too, gave her cooked oatmeal- go figure, withing half an hour she passed the egg- also lubricated her vent- with my finches i give them a crushed tums to boost their calcium when this happens- hope that helps

Cammie I have to admit that that I am watching the weather really close, I have BYC in one tab, weather on one tab, and then with poker lol I love watching the winter weather

Whoa is it all real money!? I have never played for real money, I don't consider myself that good. Lol. I used to play Black Jack at Riverwind, but we took my "wonderful" mother-in-law one time... She sat behind me with her d**n card chart and got me so worked up I couldn't think straight and lost all my money... Haven't been back since. Dang it, now I'm dreading the holiday. Lol

Does the abdomen feel hot to the touch as compered to other hens or is there a lot of redness? Usually when this area is swollen and hard it is often a sign of EYP and hens will often have many eggs inside. Sometimes if it is just a couple they will re-absorb back into the body but more often then not it will go septic.

Hopefully it is just a single egg. I will e-mail some material to you to read. It will be just a bit as I have to gather it up.
