Donna, so sorry you lot some. I assume they weren't silkies or showgirls. It's hard losing them in any case.
Kate, so happy you got so many chicks out of that incubator! Hug Charlotte for me!
Les, a little more advice for the hen with the swollen abdomen, please. She still shows NO symptoms and is eating and drinking well. I'd about decided: 1. I'd overreacted and there was nothing wrong, 2. Her nataural defenses were taking care of it, 3. I was doing the right things for her. There is definitely a small mass of some sort in there; about egg size now. I checked the abdomens of several other young hens and none have that. She hasn't laid an egg, and I haven't asked the person I got her from if she's ever laid one.
I just now put her back out in the warm brooder room in the barn with the gentle young pair she'd been in with, as I'd kept her isolated in a pet carrier for several days and nights and know they don't like to be alone. After I got the information from you, I did give her a dose of Tylan 50, orally, but with all that was going on, missed the second dose, so decided to just wait and see what develops, in view of her total lack of symptoms.
I did notice when I first picked her up that her breast bone is somewhat prominent. Now I'm wondering if I should give her a dose of Levamisole in case she has worms. Might worms create a small mass in her abdomen? Would it hurt her to dose her? Of course, I'd then dose the others in with her.
PLease let me know your thoughts. Input is welcome from anyone else also.
