Industry standards say a brown egg layer will eat about 4oz of feed daily so 30 should eat roughly 7.5 punds a day so 50 pounds should last about 6 days. Less if they are free choice.

Right now I am going through about 150 lbs a week and that is with 12 BTW Japs, 2 Mille Fleur, 5 Belgian D'anvers, about 25 laying hens, 5 light Brahmas and 17 Favorells and 7 cochins!!!

Holly Cow man! I have about 40 total & not going through that much. Do you have alot of waste???

Look at it this way, Q, would you rather the brooder blow a gasket now, while you were at home to deal with it quickly, or blow it while you are out and about, so that the brooder takes the house with it? Seems to me that when you look at it that way, having a mess in your dining room is by far the lesser of the two evils...

Quenston, I'm sorry about your bad day, but I'm adding "might burn down the house" to my list of reasons not to hatch eggs. Thanks, man!

I've been shoveling snow and shoveling more snow, in preparation for the snow we're supposed to get tomorrow night - gotta make room for the new stuff!

I went into the chicken run yesterday and coaxed the ladies out of the coop - they'd been in there for about 4 days - I'd see the Barred Rocks sticking their heads out of the pop door and pecking at the snow on their ramp, so I had mercy and went out to tramp down the snow for them and shovel out the middle so they'd have some dirt to scratch up.

Les - thanks for posting the photo of your little frizzle NN. It looks like a little fantasy dragon creature wearing a feathered battle helmet.

Q turn a few of those shelters on their sides, you may be suprised at what is under them. I use dog houses in my pens and weekly I tip them up to let the birds eradicate mice. One mouse may not eat a lot but they will still carry it off.

Q --Hate to hear about your bad day. Since you still have a house and eggs, sounds like a good day! Mines been good but,,,,,, my two week old babies are starting to contaminate a new fragrance into that end of the house. Spent evening making new brooders for the garage.
