I have a friend who makes frames of 2 x 4s on edge with chicken wire covering the expanse that he places in the poultry pens. He then seeds that area. When the vegetation reaches the size he wants, he moves the frame to another section and begins again. I believe he alternates enough of these that his poultry have fresh greens all season long.

THAT is a WONDERFUL idea!!

It also explains why the calf keeps getting the scours

Ugh! Why do cows prefer my layer mix over their own mix? .....

Don't cry, Cammie! It was years ago - way back in '88. That was probably the worst year of my life, but we made it through just fine. The house fire was a piece of cake compared to dealing with DH's health issues. I thought I was going to lose him (doctor said there was never any danger of that, but it sure didn't seem that way to me!)

We also lost our house in ''88 to a house fire. It was struck by lightening right through my sisters window. If we had been home she would not be with us today. We were fortunate that our mom took us to church that night. I still remember one of my friends coming up to a couple of us kids and saying some bodies house just burned down. And for some reason I spoke up and said that would be really strange if it was ours. I don't know what possessed me to say it, but my grandma (actually she wasn't my real grandma, but an elder of the church we were really close to that my sisters and I called grandma) was right near by and heard me. When we got in the car for her to take us home, or so we though, she said she had something to tell us and I just knew right then it was our house and started bawling. Of course, I was probably most concerned about our animals that were at home. Our mom had to leave church early so our grandma was taking us home, but we were told she was called into work for an emergency or something. I guess they did this to not upset us during the sermon since she had to leave early, but it was actually because of the fire.

We lost everything, even our family pictures. Well just about everything, there were a couple of things that were salvaged, like the piano that my grandma and her family brought over from Germany and the animals (except the fish, they were a little boiled) made it out all right. Our dog, a boxer named Kiwi, was carried out of the house by a fireman which a local photographer took this picture and put it in our local paper. But we lost pretty much everything else, all clothes, toys, pictures, and most of the furniture. I was in fourth/fifth grade at the time and my mom was a single mom. But thankfully we did attend a good church and the whole congregation came together and helped my mom out a lot. We stayed in a house that was owned by the church until my mom was able to get back up on her feet again and find us a new house. I still to this day remember that Christmas, it was for a child one of the largest Christmas's ever. So many kind people bought us new clothes and shoes and some toys for us for Christmas to help us replace everything we had lost. I wish I had known who all the things had come from so that I could have thanked them, but they kept it all very confidential. Maybe my mom knew I am not sure. But it was nice to know we had so many people around that cared and wanted to help us out, I know my mom was extremely grateful and cried each time we opened a present.

Hello Tara,

It's snowing here. Great big, wet flakes. It's really quite pretty. I hope you get some down your way. If it's gonna be cold, you might as well have something pretty to look at.

~Snowless in SE OK

Well it has been snowing for about 1 1/2 hours here. I took the puppy outside and it started when I was out there. Jordan was supposed to clean the wet bedding out of the coop and replace it with dry bedding. He managed to get the wet bedding out. I didn't realize that there was no hay until I started rounding the critters up to go inside. I had to hurry up and get the puppy in the house and get hay in the coop. Here I was in capri pants and flip flops, hauling hay in a wheel barrel and being chased by a calf. We just moved the teenage guineas, duck, and chickens in with the adult birds today. We needed the smaller coop and run to place the 10 new roos. I was home alone and trying to get 17 guineas, 7 ducks, and 14 chickens in a coop. They were not wanting to go in either. They all wanted inside, just not in the big coop. The younger ones wanted back in their normal coop and the older ones wanted under the carport. I had all of them in except 4 young guineas and 2 older hens by the time the guys got home. I was quite proud of myself, considering almost all of the birds were new to the coop. I decided to skip work again today. I know that nobody will show up in a snow storm. I'm just glad that I can make my own hours at that job. Well I hope everyone stays warm.
