We had three coyotes here the other day...and they are so bold that they are pooping all around the coop runs...I am afraid that they are going to dig under the chainlink to get our hens...we have decided that it will be worth it to go ahead and run a hotwire, but have no idea how strong of a fence charger we need to deter them. Anybody have any idea how many joules we need?

We have been shooting all the coyotes that we can, and despite this they are still bold...dang coyotes!!

I've got two, and both are rated to heat a clean wire for two miles. They cost about $22.00 at Tractor Supply, and they're got a one-year warranty that includes lightning strikes. They make good on the warranty, too, as I've lost one to a recent power pole direct hit by lightning.

First off get a 110 model that does not pulse and get one that is called low impedence. It could also be called a weed chopper and will shock through wet grass.

No charger that I know of will shock through hair though. Premier Fencing makes a scent cup to attach to the fence that are made of metal. When a critter goes for a sniff it zaps their nose and it's a lesson well remembered.

Laying woven wire down flat on the ground along the bottom of the pen will deter digging also.

But I recon the main problem is the neighbors leaving out pet food and trash overnight. That will really attract the Coyotes.

I haven't shot a Coyote in years and they cross the place every night.

Man... lots of chatter today while P&B, my Dad and I were butchering. Finished parting them up, seasoning the ones we decided to cut into quarters, and putting them all in the freezer about an hour ago. I'm about to die of tiredness I think... I'm trying to catch up before I go to bed tonight...

Well, I know that we need the low impedence for sure--we just aren't sure how strong of a charger that we need--they measure the output in joules...from 0.25 to 6.0 and higher. We just want to be sure that whatever comes sniffing around (racoons too!) gets a lesson that they won't soon forget!
