NO!!!

I met the guy who runs it for the first time last time I went. Nice guy, seems like. But his sales barn is freakin' cold! I had to leave straight from work to get there and so wasn't dressed for outdoors. There weren't many birds, either, I assume because of the weather. The cold in the winter and the heat in the summer (with only one fan, and that pointed at the auctioneer) are my only complaints about Cement.

Well, not quite only. There is that auctioneer...

One thing about Fletcher is that it has at least a couple of heaters.

I don't believe the show as at the sale barn.....

only other place in cement bigger than the fairgrounds ,where the sale is, is the gas station on the corner or maybe the fire department.

Yah the barn is new an has concreat floors clean bathrooms an shower"s . Bring your birds on in like you own the place. If you have any birds for sale or trade bring wat ever you wont....they will have stuf to eat John R an his wife are taking care of that. They are polish an silky people.

Ya know you could see if this guy is prejudice by having your honey make the call ask the same question regarding processing and see what answer he gets if its different than what the guy normally says to you then I think I would avoid the place if he appears shady towards the ladies... I dont know just experiment with the guy and find out..

That did occur to me but...

Two possibilities that might put a kink in that experiment... 1) This is a slow time of year for them and they don't usually have full processing crews every day and so can't tell when would be a good time. 2) They changed their policy because of faerie's problem.

Depends on how he raises them, I reckon. They may not be pasture raised like you could raise them, and may have medicated feed etc. So, if those things don't matter to you, it would probably be the best deal. If he raises them on pasture, it would definitely be the best deal.

I raise mine because that way, I know how they are raised and what they ate.

And $2 a bird for processing is a great deal!

I asked Brian how the birds were raised and fed. He said that they are given a proprietary feed ration that's all veggie and are turned out to free range daily from 6am to 6pm. So they are not on pasture ALA Joel Salatin, but close.

He also said, no steriods, antibiotics, hormones, or animal by-products.

Great deal, then! Wish I lived closer!!

But I do like raising my own anyway. That whole self sufficiency thing, ya know. It can be a curse.

Hubbard does produce other meat birds besides the Cornish X, but those are usually colored birds. Those look like CX on the web page.

You could be right and thats what I am hoping for but because we still live in a day and age where some folks are one way to some and one way to others I thought she might see if that was the case... for instance she could know for sure if she called again her self then a few hours later have her honey do the same call and see what he gets...

I attended a church where the place they would take the Church van to have serviced was told x amount of money and that they needed other repairs done had 2 other mechanics look at the van and was told cheaper x amount of money and those x amount of repairs that were needing to be done were non existant and didnt need to have worked on... I know this story is not chicken related but I have seen some folks be taken advantage of and not bothered to be helped because of what ever reason plainly that the person performing the work didnt want to do it... which is fine but honesty should be forthright from the git go...

I've checked all the electrical lines to be sure my heated water dishes will work when the storm hits later this week. I was on the verge of putting them all away. Sometimes it pays to procrastinate.

I took a few pictures of the Speckled Sussex rooster Maribeth re-homed with me. He's still aggressive, but he's settling down quickly. Every time I enter the pen I go directly to him and pick him up. If he growls, I tuck his head under my arm and carry him backwards. If he's quiet, he gets a nice ride around the pen facing forwards. He had one of each ride today, backwards when I came in with the food bucket, and forwards when I came in with the hose to refill water dishes. The speckled ladies adore him.

Well, I'm just glad these guys exist, whatever their personal faults may be. It might be different if processing plants that catered to small producers and raised and sold healthy chicken meat were on every corner like car repair places are, but this is a very unusual deal. They got to be better than Tyson chicken. For one, they treat their birds better and for two, they give other folks who treat their birds better a place to have their birds professionally processed.

Mind you, I feel it is rotten the way Faerie was batted around and lost her chickens and put through so much trouble, but I'm not quite ready to throw the baby out with the bathwater. We are blessed to even have them in our state.

(Rereading this, it sounds like I'm trying to be argumentative. I don't mean to, especially with BarnSwallow. I certainly don't want to discount Faerie's bad experience. I'm just trying to emphasize how important and unusual this place is.)

Poco I gotta tell you, I was really tempted to just keep going past that Sapulpa exit yesterday he is such a beautiful guy!! He looks really happy, that pullet I got off of you was out when I got home, I walked up to her and she flew up on the chair and sit there till I picked her up she is such a sweety!

Q - the hens in the pen with the new SS rooster are just starting to lay again after our recent cold weather. If they don't stop again when this next storm hits, I should be able to come up with some fertile eggs soon, if you're interested. We can call the eggs payment for rooster transport.
