I just want to say you guys that ...
The person making bators and stuff on Craigslist
is around here and really seems to be on the up and up.
Makes some wonderful stuff. I just cant get out of this snow
enough to drive their to pay deposit and then again to pick up.
Now anyone with real snow driving under their belt may not have
a problem.
If anyone wants to IM me please do...
Morning everyone just got outta bed and gonna be lazy the rest of the day!!
I set 42 more eggs last night we will see how this hatch goes! I set 2 dozen light Brahma eggs and 1 dozen cochin standards and 6 banty cochin eggs so hopin for a decent hatch!
I've come across some information on a meat bird folks are touting as the best heritage breed for meat. It is a line of Naked Neck bird folks are calling "redbro Cou Nu", bred for the French Poulet Rouge program and imported to the US. Supposed to grow to quite a tasty bird. Here are some links to it...
So, is this the real deal, or just a bunch of hype? Is it somehow different from the NNs you and others are breeding here? Does it matter that I get birds of this particular line, or will any NN be about the same?

Good luck on your hatch, Q. I'm only getting a few eggs a day, and some of them are already frozen by the time I get out to collect them. This last storm really has me rethinking my setup for cold or wet weather. Over the next couple of weeks I'm going to draw up some plans to have nest boxes, roosting bars, waterers and feeders inside the barn with access to covered runs outside. Anyone have any thoughts as to the best height for the floor of my indoor pen areas? We get water over the foundation of the barn in heavy rain, so the pens need to be elevated. Also, I'm thinking it would be neat not to have to bend over too much to clean up after the birds. I'm 5'6", and DH is 6'2", so maybe there's a good compromise height for when he needs to help.
I found an interesting coop plan that has nesting boxes on one side and a roosting bar over a poop collection box at the end. You put fresh bedding in the nest boxes, move the bedding to the coop floor when you need fresh bedding for nests, and then toss the floor bedding into the poop collection box at the end of the coop where it absorbs wetness and odor until you empty the box. It makes cleaning up easier, and it looks like it would extend the useful life of your bedding since it's used three times. Does anybody do this? Does it work?
To claim the "Label Rouge" title you have to maintain your flock a certain way, feed a certain way, process a certain way, etc... Those NN are probably a line that were worked to produce meat, but they do not look any different than some of the NN I have seen. They can come with white skin or yellow. I think Label Rouge prefers a white skin.
The ice is breaking heavy, main branches off our evergreens. Most of the deciduous trees have lost only minor or secondary branches. If this gets any worse, we'll have to think about replanting for shade and wind protection next spring. Anybody have ideas about trees that fare better in ice storms like this one?
Maribeth: Percival, named for the bossy (English School Boy) prefect in the Harry Potter series, is doing well. He's doing the chicken dance in this photo: the cold feet version, I think.

As with wine Label Rouge refers to a region in France plus all that Tara posted too. As with sparkling wine it can not be labeled Champagne unless it comes from the Champagne region of France.

I'm going to Blanchard this time... already had set aside the gas money, etc to get there. This just means I'll be able to BUY something.
I'm going to see what they have at Blanchard, if I can't find what I *want*, hopefully there will be something there that I can settle with.
I'll have to ask P&B if I can borrow a cage though :wink wink: because the only ones I have are dog crates and I'm gonna put the silkies in there as a growout pen. They need more room.
You are always welcome to borrow cages or pet carriers from me. I have loaned them out at auctions, received them back at auctions and borrowed from others at auctions. It always works out.
