Hey all

My silver duckwing OEG went broody last weekend. She had already quit laying her own eggs so I popped 8 of my BO, BR, RIR, eggs under her. One got broken since I had not moved her to a safe spot and there was a brawl over the nest. I have 21 hens per 1 very amorous rooster. (brownchickenbrowncow). I figured out of 8, maybe I would get 3 or 4...would that be a reasonable guess? Today I candled them, and like an idiot I picked some of the darkest egss I had to give her. I do notice they are darker to the pointy end and the air sac is visible at the larger end. I thought I might have seen veins in a couple, but wasn't really sure. Then I have a couple that have a dark spot in them but they are really watery, and you can see the spot floating freely in the egg. Can anyone help me to know what I'm looking at? I have used the search and found some stuff, but nothing makes it concrete. Poor Mrs. Squeaky. I have never seen anything so devoted. I wish at least ONE would hatch. If none of them hatch will she be distressed? Will she know when the 21 days are up to return to civilian life or will I have to work at getting her back to normal? She is the sweetest thing, and I love her dearly. Can I just not candle them and see what turns up? I know I have to check that they aren't oozing and I don't want any to explode in my freshly cleaned coop! If anyone has any ideas, let me know? Thanks!

Did anyone attend the Afton swap this weekend? I keep hearing mixed things about this so I am hesitant to go due to 2 hour travel time to get there. I use to go every month years ago and loved it.

Well I went and I was dissapointed. I "thought" I found a bantam partrige cochin roo BUT when I got him home he didn't have the look I wanted sooooo he will go back to the swap or I will sell me or something. He is a NICE roo don't flog me like the wyandotte does, he just don't have the leg covering he needs.

I meet a guy there that raises langshans and andulians(?) So that was neat.

I bought gallon chicken waterers for $3 each.

Was there a lot of poultry there? I just hate to make the trip for nothing. Course there is no way of knowing month to month and that is just the gamble. I suppose I could just go and if it is no good I could always go to the casino up there. I have not had the pleasure of giving my money to that one yet!

I have never had a breeding program and in the past just bought hatchery pullets or hatched whatever mutts come out of my "colorful" flock. Prior to 2008, whenever I sold an occasional hen, it was to someone passing by and who just wanted a hen or two for their grandchildren, or someone who had heard that I might have a few hens to sell. I wasn't "trying" to sell hens, but would sell a couple at a time for $6 - 8, because they were just egg layers without any famous ancestors.

It is against that background of receiving $6 - 8 a hen prior to 2008, that I have been surprised to see hens selling for $14 -18 each at auctions.

When I calculate how long it will take me to make $15 just by selling the eggs from a hen (remember, that I am only selling "colorful eggs from cheerful chickens" for eating), I have to question why I keep more hens than I need to lay eggs sufficient for the needs of my family and close friends.

If I had a breeding program and was raising chickens with the intention of showing them or creating unique characteristics, I would undoubtedly place a different value on my hens.
