A determined hen will sit on those eggs until they explode, if they don't hatch first. If you didn't mark the eggs in some way when she first started setting, go ahead and place a mark on them now, so you will have a point of reference and know whether any hens slip new eggs beneath her.

If 22 days go by since you first recall her setting and they haven't hatched, put some fertile eggs under her and she will sit there until the second batch hatches. Go ahead and remove the ones that didn't hatch

When you candle them and you can see any kind of spider looking veins coming from the broad end of the egg, you know they were fertile and have a chance of hatching. (remember you can see best if the room is totally dark and the only light is the flashlight or egg candler)

The short answer to your question is - no, the hen may not realize that her eggs are potential explosives and she will set on them way past a reasonable time for them to hatch. I have had a turkey hen set on eggs all summer long - with me rotating new eggs under her when I realized the ones she was setting on were really rank.

I did mark them... I never thought about adding new ones!! She was 7 days today. Can you candle them too much?

If your candle/flashlight emits too much heat, then candling them too often can effectively "cook" them. If your flashlight/candle doesn't give off much heat, then the only downside of candling them often is that removing them from beneath her while she is on the nest allows them to cool off. However, the hen is going to leave the nest once or twice a day anyway, so a periodic slight cool-down is natural. Try and candle the eggs when she is off the nest taking care of her personal health needs. If you are seeing veins at 7 days - your eggs are fertile. Happy Hatching!

i went to the afton flea market today.there was quite a few old english game bantams today on sunday.i know alot of the chicken people there an alot of them i talked to said they couldnt make it this weekend but would be there next month for sure.i bought a pair of cochins an silkies, some rose combed rir bantamsi bet there was 30 pairs of old english.bought some silver duckwings mille. flurs, black rosecombs bb reds ..there was some really nice ones.bought some nice new z rabbits.some geese.afton depends on the weather the nicer days allways get a better crowd of sellers an buyers

Was there a lot of poultry there? I just hate to make the trip for nothing. Course there is no way of knowing month to month and that is just the gamble. I suppose I could just go and if it is no good I could always go to the casino up there. I have not had the pleasure of giving my money to that one yet!

I guess going to the Afton swap or to the casino either one is a gamble!!

Oh yesterday there was a guy that had 3 sebbie geese!! I have never seen them there before. Lots of pigeons, don't ask me what kind cause I don't know, the guy said something about them doing somersaults when the fly and the others looked like a turkey with it's tail fanned.

Lots of guns, 3 syrofoam incubators that I was 30 seconds to late on! They sold for $3 each.

P &B s it was cloudy again today but got up in the 50's. Supposed to be in the 70's all wek! Pear trees and daffiodills are in full bloom. By the end of the week lots of things will be blooming. Finally no more frozen baby pigeons. Have three silkies setting so I'm happy. Picked up a pair of mag-pie ducks at an auction this weekend too!

Ok I gather all my black cochins together but I don't have a black roo. SOOOOOO I put in the new white roo with them. What will be my outcome?
A white roo over black hens?
And is 7 hens to many for one roo? I trimmed thier bottoms so the "fertilizer" as TJ puts it can find it's way and do it's job.

Ok here is the new roo that I picked up Sat. at Jones. His comb has a few too many points but I should get some correct ones out of my girls. Just click on the pic. to enlarge it.
