It would be interesting to find the spider that made a web that strong.
I like spiders because they eat bugs and are only able to live where there are bugs - so when I see them, I know they are ridding me of pests.

Thats too funny LOL I had read that spiders web is stronger than a steel strand the same size and a few years ago I saw a write up about how the gene had been identified that makes a spider able to spin web and using gene splicing had added the gene to go milk goats the milk could then be processed and actually used to spin web the goal they were after was to make a fiber that might make bullet proof vests and other protective things like that, I never saw any more about it but was a bit concerned about a breed of goats that already eat just about anything now having an appitite for insects and maybe larger prey LOL

my father in law said his dad used to put tobacco in the nest boxes and never had a problem- wonder if giving them wood stove ash to dust in would work- i used poultry dust, maybe i should try the sevin instead?

Robin : If you have a continuing Mite problem the real issue is you may be failing to treat completely all areas they come in contact with, The best practice I have found is prevention I treat all my pen's and run's twice a yr never miss. after putting the birds in cages, Totally clear out all old hay, litter and anything else, using a hose i wash the fire out of the coop's & pen's with bleach and soap, drain well then using a garden tank sprayer I treat the entire area consentrating on cracks and under sides of roost with Permitherin 10 diluted to 10-1. When dry i sprinkle Ton's of DE in nest boxes, floors, and feed & equipment areas, add more fresh hay more DE and there you have it, then I dip the birds in the left over solution let them shake and fluff and toss them back to their hootches LOl. I also sprinkle the DE around once a month need it or not to include a little scoop right on their back's. Never ever had Mite one ever and never will.

We know you like your birds inside so a full house treatment is in order and also all of their free range feed and hang out cubby hole area's, if you have other pet's they also must be treated and keep a close vigil. If you don't do a full and complete treatment of all area's this will be a regular deal for you and it can get to be a hassle. Robin save yourself the head & heart ache of constant worry and re-treatment by following these step's, it's simple easy and care free, a simple price to pay for peace of mind. This kind of application will insure that the cycle if any is always broken and can not start back.

Thanks Al! Will copy and paste the instructions- i have a hand sprayer, is that what you mean or something more industrial??? and i need to get some DE, is there anywhere around here or do i need to order it? i have stall dry, but i assume that won't do the same- also bird feeders for wild birds need to be moved?? i don't have anymore chickens in the house- all of them are outside now, even the banties, after losing mopsy, there wasn't really a need for them inside- but i do have inside birds too...

I was reading the thread called Most posts at https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=303563 one of the first posts said:
"Most posts would go to the Okies.

I don't think any thread will ever catch up with theirs.

I think they'd revolt and build a new website if it ever got shut down."

They were talking like they had their thread shut down, is that something that could happen to ours here?

Sad News - The 17 year old that is charged with the attempted murder of the Oklahoma City Police Office on Sunday was a student at my school two years ago. I remember him but he wasn't in any of my classes. He won't be the first of our students to serve life in prison.
When I leave school every day I don't mind the 40 min. drive to Choctaw. I t is a world away and my flower garden and chickens are therapy!

You might check with the folks that live up your way about where to get the DE stall dry is something totally different, Yes a hand held garden tank Pump sprayer is the ticket ( works like a charm ). You might be Ok on the wild bird feeders may not need to move them.

thanks carah! will check them in the morning

No problem, I will also add that DE is not the same as Stall dry. I had trouble with mite back in the spring & the permitherin really took care of it. I sprayed the first time then came back again in 10days for any hatching. I didn't dip them but did spray under each wing, back & vent area.

Carah : I love that Permiterin 10 it's great, I started years ago dilluting it for use a horse fly spay in a hand squirty bottle, and you know how expensive that store bought fly spray is. Good point on the 10 day follow up I failed to mention glad to see you got my back LOL.
