those are some large eggs! Even the "bantam" eggs are large. Do I need to place my order for pullets now or would you prefer that I wait until Spring? I would like to begin the spring with my pullets all laying, although it might be a good idea to stagger them a little so that I don't have everyone in mass production mode at Easter, when eggs in the grocery store are less than a dollar a dozen.

I keep some of the chicks back with the hopes that they will carry on the genes for the larger eggs. The egg on the top, right of the left bunch is out of our little gold-laced black NN hen and is the last of the original three bantams that we have, she is nearing 8 or so years old so she doesn't lay real regular anymore. She is also rose combed and is the cornerstone of my bantam Mad. Game breeding project. And when she has chicks she is a terror!!

If the boss will let me I am going to hatch pretty much all winter long so I can replenish our stock as it is getting on in years. We have layers that are either 10 or a tad over.

I have read that as hens get older, they lay larger eggs, but not as many eggs as when they were younger. Is that why your NN eggs are so large? Because of the age of the hens? Or did they always have larger than average eggs?

What was the name of that movie where there was a dance contest and if you "quit" something bad happened to you? I never watched it, just heard bits and pieces about it. Wasn't it something like "They only shoot horses, don't they?"
That is sort of how I am feeling right now - ready to go to bed, but hate to leave a good party before it is finished.
Of course, I have learned a lot this evening, about geese and the hours of Atwoods and that NNbreeder has chickens that are still laying after 8 years of age. I didn't even realize a chicken could live to that ripe old age. I don't think I have had any hens live longer than 3 years.

Did Kronk remove the feathers from the yard birds (that term cracks me up

) before placing them above the fire? Did he marinate them in something to tenderize them or are they going to be so slow cooked that they can only be tender eating?

Hey all. We made it back from the rodeo about an hour ago. Lauren had a blast and the rest of us ended up with some special extracurricular entertainment at the expense of the idiots sitting in front of us. They are being severely rude, so we had some fun. We came home the the neighbor's dog on our front porch. He was trying to break into my girl's cage. After careful examination, we found that it had also dug a hole into the chicken pen. Luckily we had the birds locked up tight because we knew that we would be home late. While trying to shoo it away, it snapped at DH. He didn't want to fire a gun at night considering we now have lots of neighbors. After another call to the sheriff's office, they are going to send out a deputy in the morning. Apparently all the cops were at the Indian pow-wow today and nobody wants to start an investigation tonight. I guess the birds will stay locked in the coop tomorrow or at least until we can figure something out. They will not be happy.

Shavon, did Lauren get to do a calf scramble and try to pull ribbons off the calves tails to win some money? That was always Adam's favorite part of the rodeo. We took him to small town rodeos all over Oklahoma when he was less than 12 years old, because he loved the calf scrambles so much.

She is still too young it was for ages 6-10. She is only 5, but she loved every minute of it. I'll have to get some pictures of her. She got all of her hair cut off today.

You did it Maribeth! Yahoo!
I didn't mean to post as soon as I dead and as soon as my finger hit the send button I thought oh no why did I do that.
I am glad you got the honor since you have been so busy on here tonight.
