I won $10 in a calf scramble in Okmulgee when I was about ten.

Did you take Jared to any rodeos? It is interesting that you still recall that event in your much younger life. It obviously was a joyous event for you. I suspect that Adam could probably recite how much money he made at each rodeo and which ones he totally missed any prizes.

Yup my carriage has already turned into a pumpkin and there are way too many mice running around. I need to get myself to bed. Night all.

That was the only time I won. I tried several times but usually just got kicked or fell in something I shouldn't have!

Good night okies. It has been a good day. The weather was nice. I got a nap. Got to visit with some BYC folks in person without attending an auction. Got to visit on the thread some this evening - when I wasn't talking to myself

and learned some new things from fellow BYC folks.

My birds are bedded down for the night. All the youngsters got straw in or around their cages to help retain heat. Got a mama hen moved to a very large pet carrier and remembered to check all around the coop after I moved her, so I found the two new chicks that had fallen out of the nest and were huddled together next to the wall - and put them into the crate with mama so they wouldn't get too cold tonight.

Hopefully, we will have a cool day tomorrow and will be able to work on outside projects without suffering heat stroke.

I keep some of the chicks back with the hopes that they will carry on the genes for the larger eggs. The egg on the top, right of the left bunch is out of our little gold-laced black NN hen and is the last of the original three bantams that we have, she is nearing 8 or so years old so she doesn't lay real regular anymore. She is also rose combed and is the cornerstone of my bantam Mad. Game breeding project. And when she has chicks she is a terror!!

If the boss will let me I am going to hatch pretty much all winter long so I can replenish our stock as it is getting on in years. We have layers that are either 10 or a tad over.

I have read that as hens get older, they lay larger eggs, but not as many eggs as when they were younger. Is that why your NN eggs are so large? Because of the age of the hens? Or did they always have larger than average eggs?

Nope ours have always layed large eggs from day one. Most of the time when loaded in a large carton the lid can't be shut but they rattle around in a jumbo carton. Years ago we got some black Giant hens from Shawnee that layed eggs nearly as big as a mouse, I'm sure that the gent that had them will be there showing this year too.

It doesn't take long to get old does it, we sold 11 roos yesterday and it does seem a little more quite this morning

Yes, I agree, (I joined this summer) very nice folks and very helpful and knowledgable.

But watch out - you don't have to be on this thread long before you have an irresistable urge to get more chickens and anything else with feathers.

is that a problem?

No, Not at all. How many other addictions give you breakfast?
Also, I have caught myself sitting and just watching them do their chicken thing (and DH doing it too!). It is mesmerizing, hard to tear my self away, but very good for the blood pressure.

Guess I don't get how a thread works - Oh wait - 10 post per page; 7,000 pages the 6,999 + 1 was Maribeth. Or something like that, still not awake enough to analize much.

Yeah to all who worked on it . I missed it , have family in town so wasn't on line last night.

I've got a flock introduction questions -
Yesterday my 3 partridge cochin pullets finished quarantine and I added them to my existing 5, 3mo. old banty cochins (3 partridge cockerels and 2 mille fleur pullets that have been together since hatching). At first the partride pullets were picking on the Mille pullets then the partridge cockerels were defending the mille girls.
Last night the 3 partridge pullets slept together on the roof of the coop.
- was that too cold for them?
This morning one of the Partridge pullets had flown out the peak of the pen that is open under the tarp roof and about 9 feet up.
the other 2 were hiding under the coop.
- will they integrate soon?
- are they in danger of being hurt?
Eventually the two Mille pullets will join my, about 6 mo. old, Mille roo in a pen beside this one but I think it is too soon yet. He is twice their size.

Help, oh chicken masters!

What was the name of that movie where there was a dance contest and if you "quit" something bad happened to you? I never watched it, just heard bits and pieces about it. Wasn't it something like "They only shoot horses, don't they?"
That is sort of how I am feeling right now - ready to go to bed, but hate to leave a good party before it is finished.
Of course, I have learned a lot this evening, about geese and the hours of Atwoods and that NNbreeder has chickens that are still laying after 8 years of age. I didn't even realize a chicken could live to that ripe old age. I don't think I have had any hens live longer than 3 years.

I had a Game rooster that lived to be 15 years old and he was still fertile and I hatched chicks from him and the original hen he was in with, she lived to the age of 13 herself and kept raising a hatch every year! If taken care of chickens can live a long time, and make wonderful pets!!!! My old Hugh Norman Spangled Roundhead rooster that lived to 15 was my favorite bird ever and he was tame and liked to have attention payed to him. I too am thinking of getting some NNs (For the laying purposes you know!!! LOL) Les you might think about saving me a nice unrelated somewhat trio for this spring, I favor Blue in color but if no blue make them a colorful trio please, let me know when they are about quail size or bigger and how much you need for tham. Lynn
