Good morning Sooner....

I didnt get as much done as I had hoped to but its ok, I took most of the day to do nothing and it felt pretty good!

I already let the dog out this morning, he was barking at something out by the chicken pens. When I let him out he was chasing something! I hope he got it.

I get to be off and running early today.

Skunks are near sighted so the first plan of action is to change into your oldest clothes (in case you get sprayed) and use an old sheet to "hide" your body as you approach the live trap - preferably from behind the skunk. Toss the sheet over the live trap and leave the area for a few hours. Hopefully, the skunk will not have sprayed during this process. Let the skunk settle down for a few hours and then you can quietly lift the sheet and quickly dispatch the skunk with a dose of lead poisoning from a small caliber weapon. The secret is to wear old clothes and old shoes since if you do get sprayed, your clothes and shoes will probably need to remain outside the house for about 6 weeks to get rid of the odor.

A few years ago I asked the municipal animal control folks what I should do if I were to live trap a skunk and they quickly told me "it is legal to shoot skunks".

To those in the Duncan area
Monday we will be headed over there, and could bring any of my for-sale birds if some of y'all are interested in them

Here's my list again, and remember that the prices go down as the number of birds you buy goes up

---------------------------------------------------------
Large Fowl:
White Crested Black Polish hen. She has done well in poultry shows, but her crest just has too much black in it. I'd call her breeder quality, because she certainly produced a lot of healthy, nice chicks! $12
Blue/Black/Splash Ameraucana cockerels. From show quality parents, but I have not shown these cockerels yet. $8 each

Bantam:
Polish pair. White Crested Chocolate cockerel and White Crested Black Pullet. This pair will produce 50% WCC and 50% WCB (then their offspring will produce Khaki also!). Show quality! $30
Silver Duckwing OEGB pullet. She is a show quality bird, but her breast feathers are a bit too dark to do well in big shows. $10
Black Tailed Buff Japanese cockerel. Does not appear to have short legs, so would not be show quality. $8
Black Tailed White Japanese trio. $30 for all three
Mottled x Mille Fleur d'Uccles. This year's hatch. $15 pair
Polish X Silkies. Both appear to be pullets. One is a lavender-shade of blue and the other is black. $8 each

Waterfowl:
White Pekin Duck pair. Show quality. The hen is point-of-lay and the drake is the same age. $25 for pair
White Pekin Duck hen. She has a slight crest. Point-of-lay. $10

Pictures of some of these birds and/or their parents are posted on my website linked to the left of this post. If you have any questions send me a PM pr email and I'll be glad to answer them

STeph glad you got to rest yesterday! Funny thing is lately I am going to work so I can rest! I do feel better today after calling it an early night last night. Hopefully today will be alittle easier to stay awake at my desk!

I got my cages moved yesterday so when they bring the underground in they won't be in the way. I hopefully will be getting rid of a few birds today, thus lowering my feed bill and the amount of winter work I will have.

Just thought I would share some good news the bird that almost died and had its oil gland eaten out is doing better now she is very active and eating drinking good she is poo'ing normally now NNBreeder saves the day yet again thanks NN her life was spared because of your knowlage.

Talking of skunks reminds me of a funny incident with my daughter. She was only 4 going on 5 and her and my wife and I were outside. She wandered off to the other side of the house and pretty soon we heard her calling "Here kitty kitty". After a few minutes the wife and I looked at each other at the same time and said "We don't have a kitty!" Ran around to where she was and she was trying to coax this black and white"kitty "to come to her! We werte afraid to holler at her in case we scared the skunk,so I sneakeds up behind the daughter and grabbed her and ran! It was summer and during the day so I dispatced it because they always say that if they are out during the day they may be rabid. I was sure glad she didn't catch that kitty!lol

When I was young in body.... I used to trap and sell furs. I skinned one and only one skunk. My friend whom I did this with continued on in his show of manhood and proceeded (at a later date) to show me that he was not such a wuss as I, and skinned his second skunk.

After explaining to his dad, how the skunk had approached him and his dog, his dad told him to recover the carcass. They took it to the college here in Stillwater, where it tested positive for rabies.

I was a wuss, but for the next 12 or 16... i forget.. weeks , he was getting those nice pokes in the stomach area. I hate needles

Hello all!

Sorry been out of commission for a few days, gallbladder is acting up. Anyway, thanks for the info. about chickens for sale. I'm trying to sort out what breeds I want to start out with. I like brown eggs, want to raise some to eat, love bantams, and want some silkies for the girls to show for 4-H. Going Saturday to try and get the trees cut out from around the chicken coup so I can move it from my sisters place to mine. Hopefully, the rain will let up long enough for me to be able to bring it home. Then I can put together a run. Anyway, the pain meds the dr. gave me are helping and God willing I will be able to get this ball rolling again. I've got ponies coming in two weeks and have to finish their pen as well. Some have asked where I'm at, I live in Fairland, OK, about 5 minutes from Grove, OK. I was going to ask what you recommend for the best breeds for layers and meat birds. Also what type of bedding is best for the coop. I used to use straw dusted with 7 dust back in the day, but I know things have changed a lot and am open to suggestions.

Thanks!
