I picked out the pigeons I am going to show in our clubs annual show in Nov. Its supposed to be one of the biggest we ever had because two other clubs are joining us . I wasn't going to show any but got to thinking if we don't participate our show and club may end up folding. We have a fair size membership but they are scattered all over the state and few ever make the meetings. And there aren't a lot of younger people joining so thats not a good thing. I'm afraid the pigeon interest is waning.
Anyway I picked out 5 brunner pouters and 3 parlor rollers to show. Now I need to start working with them so they will be used to being handled.

checking in sirs and madams!! yep not on as much as i'd like- mornings and eves- we broke down and ordered a 10 x 10 shed for those fuzzy butts! we just couldn't get the coop sealed well enough, so every time it rains, its a soggy mess- so with 18 large chickens they will have lots of room in it- remember the crippled guinea chick? well, since he is a special needs guinea he gets bathed a couple times a week, thought you'd get a smile out of this- dave is snuggling him- the guinea has a buddy who is a girl and she likes to hang out ontop of the cockatiel cage- obviously the cockatiel doesn't like that idea

I have been researching most of the day and think that these are the breeds I want to start out with: Standards: Australorp, Deleware, Orpington, and Plymouth Rock and Bantams: Cochin, Frizzle, and Silkie. What do you all think about these breeds? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Also if anyone has any of these for sale or knows of anyone who does I would be interested in that info. as well.

Thanks again!

I am pretty certain that OkCarla's eebantams are out of your flock - didn't you send some hatching eggs for prizes/auction at last Fall's POOPS event? I seem to recall that when I last bought the EE bantam hatching eggs, she indicated that the original eggs she hatched came from you.

I have a bantam barred Cochin roo that needs a new home but I don't remember where you are in relatation to me.

I started with Australorp's & loved them. I still have one or two out there that are a part of my laying flock, they are a nice all around bird.

All we have are crosses in bantam. I have a little Mad. Game project going in bantam form so ours are crossed with Malay and Shamo.

At one time Duane Urch had some bantam NNs that were imported from Germany and true bantams, they were downsized through breeding and not by crossing with another bantam breed.

To answer one of your original questions, my preference is fluffy pine shavings as bedding on the coop floor. I like to use the nest box square pads that eggcartons.com sells, to put inside the nest boxes. They consistently cushion the floor of the nestbox and are more difficult to push into a scooped out area. The pine shavings break down with the poo, so you have great fertilizer to toss into a heap to mature until it has lost enough nitrogen that it won't automatically burn your garden plants. The pine shavings also are not as slick as straw, so I am less likely to fall when it is wet. You can mix Diatemaceious Earth (not sure of the spelling) into the shavings to provide insect/mite control without chemicals.

Cochins, Silkies and Buff Orphingtons all have a reputation for going broody on a regular basis. I am pretty certain that "Frizzle" refers to the type of feathers, rather than a specific breed. For instance, I have a frizzled Naked Neck roo, which is cool looking.

Hope you get to feeling better

Humm ok, I have no idea who that is. I have found out that mine has the wrong color legs but has all the right bald spots & is a very nice bird otherwise. Now I have to figure out what I want to do with him......

Saw something interesting tonight - my cats tend to walk with me when I go across the street, where some of my poultry and animals are located. I was walking across the street a little while ago and one of the black cats ran across in front of me, about 30 seconds before a car approached. The driver stopped her vehicle totally, rolled her window down and asked me if that had been a black cat that just crossed the street in front of her. I affirmed that it was one of our two black cats and she thanked me, backed up and turned her vehicle around and drove off in the opposite direction. I worry about my black cats around Halloween, when I don't want them to mysteriously "disappear", but this was my first experience with someone doing more than just laughing at their superstition about black cats crossing their path. Now I need to find out what the antidote is for black cats crossing your path, since mine do that on a regular basis. Do I need to carry some salt in my pocket and toss it over my shoulder whenever one of the black cats tries to trip me?

Right now, my biggest fear is tripping on one and falling
