How hard is it to train a dog to guard livestock? i have a lab/heeler mix that killed my 3 week old roo, and you got me thinking, he is under a year old- was a dump dog- is it possible to train him after this happened? we have to keep him leashed now....

Ok, what is she?? I just call her Red....

There are some great trainers that will come out and work with you. Unfortunately the only one I know is no longer doing it. My grandfather would give a hunting dog one or two second chances, then get rid of it. If they have a taste for it, it can't be trained out of them.

That I don't know yet. My pyr pups are all under a year old and I still haven't let the birds out to find out. I'm pretty sure my shepherds would kill the birds though, so I guess I need to keep all my birds in their pens. A few times I've taken a dog in a pen with me, and they've been good, but I don't trust any of them, at least not yet. Anyway, they are very protective of our property and they keep all other dogs and other predators away.

Quit it with the eggs!

I wish I could say I would be bringing many OEGB but as all that have them know they get a little particular about laying and this stupid cold is not doing me any favors!

Supposed to be nice weather no this cold stuff...water freezing gotta turn the hind-end warmer on in the Mom-mobile (actually that is kinda cool...er...warm) My mutts are hatching and laying fine. I threw the broodies out of the nest tonight and collected the three remaining eggs...two should hatch next day or two and the third was broke. Hopefully they will be broke.

I know what they'd do carla! They'd stand there and bark constantly till you came out and saw what they'd found

I broke my broody this weekend! I moved the coop/run and stuck 9 - 4 week old chics under her!

She ran out of the coop as fast as she could

. She actually is being a pretty good mama so far. She herds them, preened one that I saw, and is tolerating me putting them under her at night pretty well. One even returned to the coop and was hiding under her tonight, yeah progress!

Just waiting to see if she starts laying again......

I am thinking that a lab/healer mix is not gonna make it as livestock guarding material...sorry! A little too much natural hunt and chase in that dog. Find you a pyrenes!

Sonya - those lat two things are ducks!

Can't fool me I took Animal Science 101!

So...did I ever find anyone to write my Lifespan Development Paper? I really hate writing! I am willing to give free counseling advice her or at POOPS! You will be fine...just give me some birds
