My flats of dianthus were on clearance from a fundraiser that got rained out too many weekends this month. They were not as large as the ones I paid more than twice as much for at the Farmer's market, so I just planted two plants in each hole I dug with the bulb planter.

Strawberry Freezer Jam is the best stuff ever. Years ago, I made low sugar freezer jam using the low sugar Sure Gel. It used to be so easy (didn't require ANY cooking) that I put up 14 flats of strawberries in that low sugar freezer jam one year. Then Sure Gel changed the formula so that you had to add water and cook part of the juice with the water before adding the strawberries. I stopped making it once I ran out my stash of the old formula low sugar Sure Gel. I wrote Sure Gel and told them that I didn't like the change in their formula because it made the strawberry jam taste like strawberry jello when you added water to it, but they said people preferred a firmer set on the jam. It has been more than 10 years since I made the strawberry freezer jam and people at my office still ask me about it. My grandmother used to make freezer strawberry jam using Certo. I have tried that, but it is really sweet - good fresh strawberry flavor - but really sweet.

My MIL uses Certo, I used some put out by ball this time. They also had a low sugar one that I didn't get but might this next time. Like I said I just got those on Sat evening and will be getting more tomorrow. I see lots of freezer jam in my future. There was NO cooking with this one either. Didn't seem to be real sweet when I tried it but I know it can get sweeter with time.....It also showed to use splenda so I may just try a batch with that.

Do you can anything?? I am going to try my hand at it this year and have been surfing for tips.

Chinese, we like the China King buffett on Shawnee bypass.

Mexican, I use to like El Charo's on the corner of Shawnee & Main but the last few times it has been hit or miss. So I would just go with El Chico's on Shawnee(North side of the road)

BBQ would be Runts or Myplace.

What No Hamlin's?

Well it seems that you guys had a nice Mother's Day.
We had a big shindig here. Lot of family and of course food.
Its quiet now, everyone has gone back to thier own abodes.
I need a nap but its too early.
I bought my wife 15 Welsummer chicks at the Jones auction.
She was speechless. I just love when I surprise her like that and she is so thrilled she can't even speak.

NNBreeder thank you, these are just started chicks. Maybe 6 weeks old. Wonder how they got lice? Theyve been in a shop except for the last few days. I gotta go check all my birds tommarow. Wonder if they can come that way from the hatchery and im just noticing? Or they could of come from the people I bought some started silkes from that turned out to be sick. Ill pick up some 7 dust tommarow.

What all colours of Nekkids Necks do you raise?

I have chicken wire and at the bottom I have about 3 to 4 inches that layed out or in on the ground depending on the pen. Most of mine have landscape timber or railroad ties around them. I have never had anything get in the pen other than if I forget to close the gate. Except snakes, but there isn't much you can do about those other than kill them and that is my favorit thing to do with them anyways. I can always tell when I have one, the hens don't want to go into the hen house and will try to roost in the pen.

ok, course hubby pointed out we need the concrete to create a barrier from water on top of critters- we have this slant and when it rains our yard is a stream...i have heard all these horror stories about coming out and finding the remains of the chickens....

we have a black snake that wanders around here, and the possums of course, dogs are penned up - although we have thought of making their fence extend around the chicken run to keep predators out...

I burned out on Hamlin's years ago, about the only thing I like there is the white sauce. I did go back an read, he most likely didn't get my reply anyways, he was going to the renisants fair today. LOL.

Hum don't know about the dog thing, if they like to eat chickens they could also try to get in to them or just worry them constantly by barking and carring on. My back yard (with dogs) and the chicken pen are back to back, I had to put up covering so they didn't just sit there and bark at them all day. The dog fence also has hot wire on it to keep them from digging out to have a feast on my birds. I swear I won't have big dogs again. My Rat terrier ran loose with the chickens, I will miss her.

The easiest way to deter snakes is that 1/2 in plastic mesh that they sell at Walmart to put over fruit trees.

The snakes try to crawl through it and then get caught, which may create another problem. A snake caught half in half out of the pen!

Ronnie right now we have a few blacks in standard and I am working on a line of reds plus we have layers that are multi-colored.
