I miss everybody... too nice a day to hang out on the computer? I was outside with hens most of the day. Started out foggy as heck, but burnt off to a pretty nice afternoon. trying to get spring cleaning chores done around the house. Moving appliances to clean, wash curtains, clean carpets etc.

How's the bator comin' Big Al?

Maybe it's spring break keepin' everyone away!!

I'm here, was up early and fixed breakfast for everyone, let the wife sleep in a little, got the kids around, then the boy and I moved the pullets to a bigger brooder outside where they have more room,went over and helped my dad half the day putting in a cabinet in their kitchen, have to go back tomarrow and work on them all day, got home late and got chores done, my four yo backed into my cactus and Ihad to pull stickers outa her hieny and play nurse, the wife went to work at noon so it's me and the kidos till about 9pm, we just got supper over and checkin my mail, Busy Day !!!!

OK folks here are the pic's of my homemade Incubator I made this weekend, I know it's not perfect but I only had the weekend to build it.

Features:
27"x27"x36" Tall
Remote water fill tube
2 fresh air inlets
independant observation light
custom built in Candler
3 large veiwing areas
oak cabinet
Hatching drawer : capacity 120 eggs
1 40 egg auto turner now, w/ capacity for 6 total, 240 eggs
4' high velocity fan
250 watt heat lamp
reflective insulation
4 thermometers, 2 digital w/humidity controls & water wiggler


We are in the test phase now, but it is holding temps and humidity very well, and heats up in a flash, as I have been jacking with it, it seems to operate without any hinderences. The candler works very well it even surprised me how good it worked!!!.
I know it may have some flaws but it was my first attempt at building one.

OK so tell me what ya'll think.

Al, I have to say , I am very impressed, but I can not figure out the red jar in the back???? What a cool idea to use a cabinet like that and put the top glass in it, you really have something to be proud of, How about calling it the Viewmaster Incubator??? Lynn

Well Al, I think you did an outstanding job, it looks like it could go in any room of the house..
Is the red jar your heat sink? Now I can't wait for your first hatch. In the hatching draw are you going to install a egg tray on something like that?

In bantams we have RIRs, Shamo, Malay, Asil and some Malay X Naked Neck that I have developed broody hens out of and 1 pen of White Leghorns with one White NN hen in there too.

We started with some fair stock RIRs plus a few red Sex-links that I put an old but good RIR rooster over and got some fair birds out of. The hens were larger, darker and better shaped then their moms were and I was going to breed them back to their dad but unfortunatly he died before producing any chicks out of them. He had spurs close to three inces long so he was old. But he never put a feather out of place on his hens and never tolerated any foolishness either.

That was two years ago and I have been looking for just the right rooster ever since. Some of our hens are approaching ten years old and we lose one now and again but those that are left are still laying well.

Al That incubator looks good. May you hatch every egg that goes in there.
