Hello there fellow Okies... I am new here. Here is a little bit about myself... I am hoping some of you may point me in the dirrection of some local sales or swapmeets. I live in Mannford. I am looking for Chickens(heavy) for both meat and eggs and even some rabbits. Since I am just getting started I am open to any breed. Once I get established I may look into hatching eggs and raising my own birds. I have been told of a sale over by Chouteau. Does anyone have any info on that sale?

(1) I have had chickens in the past. I had some Black Australorps three years ago. One of my kids raised 90 broilers for the Drumwright broiler show last spring. We moved and I am just now getting set up again. I learned a lot last time and I hope to get more into it this time around.
(2) Right now I don't have any birds. I am in the process of building a chicken house now. I hope to avoid some of the errors I made last time.
(3) I am open to different breeds. I will be looking to the heavy breeds to start. I want something dual purpose. I want eggs and meat for the table.
(4) I came across BYC while doing research online.
(5) I also raise pigs that my kids show in 4H and FFA. I also keep rabbits and I want to get into some game birds also.
(6) My Wife and I live in Mannford OK. We have five great kids. I grew up in NE OK, my Grandpa Charles always had chickens and rabbits. He used them to provide both meat and eggs for his family. I hope to pass this experience on to my kids.
(7) I signed up here hoping to find some good local resources.

wdmyers, welcome to the Okies bunch.

There's a thread somewhere on the forum that tells of all the Oklahoma auctions and swaps that we know of. Here's the link. https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=33248

Some
of us love to go to auctions and swaps! Gerald and I just left the Durant auction which was still going strong. I have a feeling it will last another 2-3 hours at least. I bet the prices are really low by the end of the auction.

We met up with several BYC Okies while at Durant today. Sold some young birds and eggs and visited a little with Grace and Sherri and Daniel and Sam.

OK, we sold birds and eggs and only bought 2 birds ... I'm so proud of us! I think we're really downsizing! We bought a 2 yr old black shoulder peacock pair for $95

Has anyone ever raised any Grouse? Sam bought 40 grouse eggs at the Durant auction and then asked us if we wanted to hatch them "on the halves" ... I looked at Gerald and of course he said yes. So, I'm holding a carton full of grouse eggs all the way home ... 2 plus hour drive & trying to keep them from being shaken too much in our bouncy old pickup truck. and typing on the laptop.

I don't even know what these Grouse critters look like. I did find info on the web that says they need 23 days to incubate. Are they anything like Gremlins? I sure hope not !!!!

What kind of grouse are they ( roughed ) Grouse??. They are a good hunting bird, and get to a decent little size smaller than a chicken but bigger than a quail. there are also several different types.
