OK, I'm back from cleaning up all the brooders & washing & bleaching all the waterers & filling up food dishes, etc. Gosh, it never ends!
I had a pretty good time at the Blanchard auction. Our eggs sold well, and the only chicks we PO'd were my silkies and egyptian fayoumis that didn't get bid up to $2, oh and my turkey poults because they didn't go over $4. It's amazing people would pay more than $4 each for some turkey eggs there, but not for week old poults.
The only thing I bought was a half barrel chicken shelter for $1, 18 creole bantam eggs, and a wooden A frame chicken roost. Gerald was super happy because he bought some chains & boomers for his trailer. Oh, but the highlight of Gerald's evening was when he started talking to Kasi's husband Chuck about trucks! He's still talking about it today, hoping Chuck will come over some day & look at his silly ol' army truck.
I was amazed at the prices of the large rabbits selling prices at the auction. Yes, those giant rabbits did go high. I was even going to bid on the flemish giants thinking that Maribeth might want them, but they went over $25 each. I think the rabbits that went really high last night were some bred does that were another large breed. Baby bunnies were selling for over $5 each, as I recall and of course the cuteness factor weighed in heavily on the prices, because there were definitely parents buying for their kids there.
Oh, and the grouse eggs that I took to hatch for Sam finally hatched yesterday. I had read they should take 23 days to hatch. Well, they were on day 25 and I was about to toss 'em and I had turkey poults hatching & I saw all these miniature turkey poults everywhere! At least that's what they looked like! Anyway, I decided I didn't want to venture into raising grouse, so we took all the grouse chicks to Sam at the auction last night, and he had decided the same thing (not to raise them) so he sold them at the auction. Now there's 3 more that hatched this morning. Hopefully they can survive in the brooder with the turkey poults.
Oh, and we visited with Daniel, aka Arms310, at the auction last night & met his very pretty wife and beautiful baby daughter! They bought some eggs and chicks last night, and they forgot to take the baby's toy that she kept throwing on the floor. And they forgot the Easter sack. Sam has the toy, and I think he gave the sack away to someone ... since it had a live baby chick in it.
