They told me the government had done away with the medicated feed and that doing putting the terramycin in the water was what was being recomended. There head guy of the store was the one telling me this and several more were in on the conversation.

I was supposed to use 1/2 tsp. per gallon water of the powdered terramycin. Some man was in front of me checking out and he said the stuff was amazing. It wasn't amazing enough today to save my chick.

LOL

The reason for the medicated feed is the prevention of Cocci in the chicks. It is an anti-coccident or something like that, not an anti-biotic. here is a list of drugs to prevent cocci.

Amprolium 0.0125-0.025 0.0125-0.250 0
Amprolium + ethopabate 0.0125-0.025 + 0.0004-0.004 — 0
Chlortetracycline 0.022 — 0
Clopidol or meticlorpindol 0.0125-0.025 — 0
Decoquinate 0.003 — 0
Diclazuril 0.0001 0.0001 0
Dinitolmide (zoalene) 0.004-0.0125 0.0125-0.01875 0
Halofuginone hydrobromide 0.0003 0.00015-0.0003 4-7
Lasalocid sodium 0.0075-0.0125 — 3
Maduramicin ammonium 0.0005-0.0006 — 5
Monensin sodium 0.01-0.0121 0.006-0.01† 0
Narasin 0.006-0.008 — 0
Narasin + nicarbazin 0.003-0.005 (of the combination) 5

Salinomycin sodium 0.0044-0.0066 — 0
Semduramicin 0.0025 — 0
Sulfadimethoxine + ormetoprim

The exact same drugs are used to treat Cocci but in higher concentrations.

I can't find medicated feed out here in Tn either. I could sure use some if this cool damp weather doesn't break. Its really hard on young birds here in tn .I don't remember having some much of a problem with it in Okla.

one of the things I saw while flipping through my book was a suggestion on how to keep the breeds separate as they hatch. They suggested putting plastic fruit baskets upside down over eggs of the same variety in the hatcher, to keep the chicks of the same variety together. (do fruits like strawberries still come in plastic mesh looking baskets or is everything now packaged in clear plastic boxes with holes?)

I haven't seen the plastic ones for a long time. Makes sense. I'm still not sure what to do when all these eggs start coming out. I know now to stagger setting eggs. I set 16 doz. in the same day.

Donna what type of bedding are you using in the brooder?

Teach good to hear from you, Did you get the shakes being away so long?

There are less expensive places to get meds online but these people are at the Shawnee show every year and are nice. If you call you talk to the owners of the company andthey ship fast too.

I did that last year - had 18 dozen in the Sportsman - unfortunately, the air circulation in my older model wasn't sufficient to keep the temperature regulated with that many in there and the ones in the front (or was it the back?) didn't hatch well.

Every few days I will pull the racks in the Sportsman and swap out positions front to back and top to bottom. Helps to even thing out at hatch time. Last hatch I had a few that didn't hatch so I left them in there for a few days. Even though they were all set at the same time I had some that hatched up to four days after due date.
