You need to go ahead and start the process of them sending replacement chicks. They need to send them on a non-holiday Monday and you should let the mailman or PO know that they are on their way and that you will come pick them up. I am lucky that my PO is small and they all have my cell phone number and use it to let me know that chicks/hatching eggs are in (sometimes at 7 AM). Four days is way too long and if you find them they will be weakened too much to all fully recover.

I am sooo sorry, but they should make it right. Good luck.

Stray, I have had to get replacement chicks from Murray McMurray and Ideal. They were both great to deal with. I live pretty rural and my chicks would come into the Enid post office, sit on their dock, go to the Fairview post office, sit on their dock, then make their way to the Cleo post office where they would call me. I started calling the Enid post office and made arrangements to pick them up there when they arrived, which was usually around 2 or 3 in the morning. Being as pregnant as I am, my husband did not want me driving around at that time of morning by myself and he sure didn't want to do it. I bought some chicks at Atwoods this year and hatching eggs through the mail. Unfortunately, some of the postal workers don't care if there are baby chicks in the boxes. I would start the replacement process now and find out the route your chicks will take to get to you and start calling each post office along the way and alert them that there will be chicks coming through.

Hi everyone, I'm stuck here at work tonight until 3:30 am

I have a big dilemma .... somebody in Michigan bought 20 turkey eggs and I sent 27. I got a message from this person last night:

"Hello I got my eggs today. I am disappointing. I had a very large number of broken eggs. I had broken eggs in every one of the bundles. A total of 13. I am short on every group that I ordered. Any ideas on how to handle this"

I replied:

"Could you send me pictures of the box and the eggs that are broken? I've been mailing eggs this way for years and it is rare that any egg is ever broken. If you send me pictures of the damaged box and eggs, I will consider replacing eggs if you pay for shipping.

I'm not sure if you've bought many eggs thru the mail before, such as eBay or here on Backyardchickens, but I cannot guarantee the eggs in any way. I do my very best to wrap each egg individually and with lots of bubble wrap, but I can't control the post office and how the box is handled. To quote another egg seller "I send eggs priority mail, packaged as carefully as I can for as safe a delivery as I can. I have been selling eggs this way for several years so I pretty much have it down to a science but no matter HOW good eggs are packaged, there will be the occasional damaged egg/s. I do send extras just for this reason. Same as other sellers, I can not be held responsible for your hatch rate."

So, they finally sent some pictures, which show the box is damaged on the 2 sides that they show. They also took individual pictures of some eggs ... but not a collective shot of 13 damaged eggs. I sent them a message back to please send a picture of all damaged eggs and showing the tops of the eggs with our writing on it. What do ya'll think I should do? I value everyone's opinions.

Oh, by the way, this person has zero (0) posts on BYC. And their gramatical error "I am disappointing" makes me wonder about them.

Carla-did they pay for or request insurance? Beyond that it sounds like you are handling it just fine. I don't complain at all on shipped eggs unless I didn't get what I paid for i.e. the right amount of (a lady sent me 8 when I paid for 12) or correct type of eggs (even after a 2nd shipment the guy still didn't send me the 1/2 doz. Delaware eggs). Even if the hatch rate is awful and I know that the shipping wasn't the problem with blood ring and scrambles, I don't complain. I know the incubator is working great because I throw in my own test eggs all the time and get 100% hatch rates or at least all attempt to hatch.

I figure that is just the gamble on shipped eggs, especially since you sent so many extras. Just my 2 cents.

Just got another message from this unhappy turkey egg buyer

person's id removed :

I am getting tired of being called a liar. I will send you a picture with all 13 eggs and maybe I should also post a photo on this website with all the grief I am getting. I cannot believe the trouble I am having with you. How do i show the crushed eggs, any ideas. The box was received in good shape Upon removing the eggs, there was egg goo all over and 13 broken eggs.

I never called you a liar, I just want to see what could have happened to the eggs, and to see which ones were damaged.

Yes, please do post photos on the website for everyone to see.

Thank you

Carla

Carla,
As someone who has bought quite a few eggs from you, I can attest to how well they are packed. I have bought turkey eggs from you as well, so I should have some idea of how they hold up with the way they are packed.
I agree with the way they worded things, it doesn't sound exactly up and up. I think on this one you are going to have to go with your gut. If you feel you are being scammed, then you should protect yourself, but otherwise, I would replace the difference in what they paid for and what wasn't broken(6 eggs) , with them covering postage.

Thanks ke_ben, I appreciate your reply. From what I've heard with the post office ... they won't insure eggs, so I've never offered insurance.

Thanks Cleochick, I probably will replace the eggs (not including the 7 extras) as soon as I find out which eggs they still have that aren't broken, and if they agree to pay shipping.

Carla - I know what you mean about shipping eggs. I shipped a batch to a gal in Texas...perfect...next shipment 30 broken. They were upset...but not with me! I think it is good of you to offer replacements but don't pay the shipping. You sent what was ordered with extras. You did your part...not a person that ships eggs would fault you. Sorry you are dealing with this. Having bought lots of eggs through the mail...broken eggs hasn't been the issue...it is the clear ones that show zdero signs of development...makes you wonder if folks even own roosters!!!

Stray - calm down girl! Give the hatchery a chance to make it right before you get mad. They are good folks and those of us that have had issues can assure you that they make it right...too much depends on the reputatuon in that business! Besides I am betting someone wrote down the wrong ship date! No way they went out Sunday or Monday! They shipped Tuesday...expect them tomorrow! Wanna bet on it?

Carla I am so sorry you are having this problem. I am a bit confused though. They said in this last posting that the box was in good shape when received but you said in the photo that there was two sides of the box damaged. ??? I think it would be a fabulous idea if they would post the pictures, I know from experience what 13 eggs looks like crushed.
Are they wanting a refund or replacement? If you do not mind me asking?
