Hey..... I've got a large problem.
I can't seem to keep these babies alive... I've done everything I've been told by the hatchery to do and I'm still having problems. I gave them the stuff you're supposed to give them, including the grow gel, and this quik-chick stuff. Yet they're still dying. I don't know what to do.

I've got them under a light, l've got freash food and water for them and everything. Is it just a bad time for chicks or something?

What a day.... my Mom's SoonerCare went through, so I spent the day cleanign out her room... was that hard.... I have a whole pick up full of trash and another load of thrift store crap....I bawled through the whole thing.... I felt like she died... then she called me in the middle of it and I felt even worse....I don't even have the heart to tell her I did it....she wanted to do it... but there is no way... It took me all day. And I'm wiped out....

Then I go out to the coop and Maggie is dead in her nest...and Henny Penny, who is the only hen that actually likes me is nearly so... must be the heat....

Now they just put Mike on call because of these darn "heat bursts". No rain... just hot ass wind.

I have a cat this is throwing up and I don't why... and of course it's my best bud...

I'm about finished....why bother... I never get out of the hole here.

Dachsunds - that is a first for me on the quail...bobs around here are always high and there have been times I could barely give my cotournix away...pharaho (I cant spelll) are just a color

Stray - are the birds bunching? they are cold or drafty...if they are spread all out they are hot or the air is not circulating...do they have poo collecting on their butts...they are scouring...are the dead birds flattened...the other birds are squishing them and they need more room...hope that helps

Stray are you using any kind of bedding in your brooder? If it is shavings Cedar is bad for them.

Another thing I would have to ask about is ventilation, the air needs to change out in the brooder but not be drafty. If you are using a plastic bin take and drill 1/4in holes all along the bottom every half an inch or so. The chicks could be getting wet from a humidity build up and then chilling.

Watch for the droppings also is there any tinged with red or that look outright bloody?

Okrobin first smell the breath of the bird. Sour crop will smell like rotten grain and just be rank. Here is all I know about it, it's a long read but very good.

Stray - Sorry you're having problems.... What kind of light do
you have on them? Are they piling up? They will have to be
kept at about 90o for a couple of weeks, at least. These that
we have in the clear boxes in the livingroom are under small
brooder type shields and lightbulbs, and we have to cover
the grill deals that are on top of the boxes with towels to
maintain a 90o temp in the house with the air conditioning on.
Wish I had an answer for you.

Henny - seems this "nutty" weather is against us this year.
Pa-Pa and the kids have planted gourd seeds all around the
flight pens that are exposed to the direct sun, but with all this
rain, the vines are way behind this year. They have been out
there working all day on pens and about melted down. And,
we are all sick over our "mutt" young yellow, ring-tailed, barn
cat that a neighbor gave us. He would take every step with
Pa-Pa and was a mousing nut. Thursday morning he acted
like he was drunk or something and staggered around....then
seemed better. Yesterday morning, he had passed....no sign
of snake bite, no poison out there, no sign of any kind. He was
only closed up in the flight pen at night, so heat wasn't the
problem.

And, Henny, went through about this same stuff with my
mother. Deep breath.....and carry on..... You're doing the
right thing. Am glad they got all their paperwork taken care of.
That's, at least, one thing that you don't have to worry about.
You have to take care of Henny and Mike.....

Racoon and I had a fight this evening.
We were out side working on are new brooder house when I heard one of my hens yell. I told Don something after my chicken and we took off running. Got to the chicken yard and there he was with one of my hens, My husband scared him off. Then DH went to get feed to calm the chicken and I stayed there. I was petting one of them when I hear another one yell, I picked up a 2 by 4 and hit him with it. He started running and I tossed it at him as the climb the fence. Hit him in the head but he keep going. Then the darn thing came back so I hit him with rocks.
The chickens are penned up tight and the live trap is set.
I put my dog in the turkey pen so maybe everything be safe for the night. Got to go to Atwoods after church a buy shotgun shells.
Do, they sale guns on Sunday? I like to buy a rifle. We never kept guns. We owned the shot gun for 20 years and never got shells. My husband tells everyone it for his safety. He even he says it time to get one.
I have a BB gun and I use it on my sisters dog when it's after my chickens. My husband says,I am a better shot then him. And I am way better a tossing things and hitting my target. But for some reason that doesn't sound like he was saying something nice,does it?
Can you believe that coon kept coming in the pen with me standing there?
I will probably wake up at every little sound tonight.

NN - Cedar shavings? - Is that just for chicks? We use a lot
of cedar shavings in our pens, but adult birds...... Has always
been our understanding that the cedar would help keep the
bugs down.

Our "chicks" are on the bumpy "cheap" paper towels and we
waste feed over those to give them footing. Then, at about
two weeks old.....when they hatch another batch of "something",
the chicks to out to the "real" brooders......LOL Like I said, some
people have acquariums with "fish" in them.....Not this bunch.....
LOL But, they are a lot more fun to watch than some fish
swimming around...................... Guess God forgot to tell these
little old english chicks that they aren't nearly as big as the
RIR or New Hamp chicks......But, seems the "big 'uns" don't
know either, and back down......LOL

Lightening - That's cause for concern if it came back with you
in the pen. I vote that you stay with the shotgun. Get some
shells and be ready. Do not get yourself in a position that you
could get bitten. The "uninvited" critters seem to be a real
problem this year.

The oils in the Cedar will cause respratory problems in small animals and can be fatal to Hamsters and such. In a run that gets plenty of air it should not be much of a problem. In a closed up coop though the build up could be a problem.

For bedding in brooders we have in the past used Alfalfa pellets. Smells good, absorbds good and if they eat it....so what? The only problem that we have had with them is that when they scratch and raise dust it bothers Teva's Asthma.
