Suggestions, please
3 out of 5 turkeys that I just took out of the hatcher and one of the guineas look like they have swollen hocks and/or are splay legged. I have added vitamins to their water and chopped up a soft boiled egg for them. Any other suggestions? Is this caused by the temperature when they were hatching, the protein level of the parent birds, the amount of space they have to walk around in after they hatch and before they are removed from the hatcher, all of the above or some combination thereof?

P&B - I would bet a combination of all of them...some of it has to do with the wire they hatch on to and how things are as they dry out...if they lay funny or have some gunk stuck to them...I know...I am of no help but I feel your pain!

So many of the guineas and chicks were getting under the hatching tray and flattening themselves into pancakes, I took the hatching tray with the wire bottom out of the incubator and am just setting the cardboard egg cartons flat on the wooden bottom. Some are still trying to crawl beneath the cardboard egg flats, which isn't helpful to them, but none of these have any gunk on them and the chicken peeps and the one lone peachick that hatched look fine. There are also the turkeys and guineas that look fine in this batch. Go figure.

Teach :

I got a funny looking surprise tonight during feed chores, I collected a reg sized very light blue egg with no spots or anything, just plain clear blue one of the quail layed, My whites are the only ones old enough to lay. Is this normal??, it was the first one I ever got, What's up.

Hey Clucks,

I'm doin ok. How about yourself? I've missed talking to you.

And Al,

Don't work yourself to death out there in that heat. I remember all too well what it's like in the construction business. That heat will kick your butt quick.

You sure got that right, I am watching myself pretty close, found myself kneeling under the tailgate about 4:00 after a water jug drenching, felt better.

We were talking about that at lunch in OKC! I have had a couple of those myself lately. Therefore...it is normal! Aren't they cool! Those qual don't follow the rules about egg laying! They throw different colors and patterns.

I hear ya on that construction hot thing! Worked in Houston area putting in sidewalks. There were several afternoons that we had to stop and do little stuff it was just too hot. Couldn't have poured concrete if we had wanted to...it would have been hard before it got off the shoot!

So I guess egg color would give no indication of breed or type would it??. Yes unfortunatly the summer is my boom time so we have to really get after it, I just try to stay prepared ( yea right ).

Al - staying prepared means taking precautions against the heat - which may require that you adjust your hours and not try to go 90 to nothing in the middle of the day. No matter how much you consider yourself immortal, the laws of nature still apply to you. Push yourself too much after your recent experience with the heat and with your history of heat related illness...... the laws of nature can result in unpleasant long term health problems or worse. I am not sure whether I want a

or a

icon .... just please~ don't be macho and overdo things in this heat.

Teachpanhandleperson, We have quail hatching from the last eggs we got from the adult quail before they all kicked off. As soon as they are through I will get the eggs I just got from you in there.
I should already have them in but I don't have any room.
