I am starting to feel better. The heat is awful though. I planted my squash at 11:00 p.m. last night. Did that and fed all the veggies. I don't know how Mike is doing it and I think they should not be working anything but emergencies in this late afternoon stuff. Maybe I am just a wuss.

Neecy hang in there. Been there. Done that.

Grace I can zoom over there with my .22 and we can take care of that coon for ya!

Neecy, I think that would be a great thing for you to organize for your fair!
As long as the hatcher was "all closed up" it shouldn't be hard to keep stable temps.
How many egg can it hold? I would, maybe, set twice that many... if you wanted to keep it full, and to account for the ones that do not hatch.
I would just set eggs every day (for the number of days long your fair is), starting 20 days before the fair.
I do not know how much difference different colors of eggs would make, but different breeds/species would be great!
If you set Quail, Ducks, or other birds, just remember to figure the different hatch times in.
I think selling the chicks for the kids is a good idea. You could also give each 4-Her a certain number of chicks (as long as they and their parents wanted them). Or, whoever provides the eggs (you?) could keep the chicks.

Slightly Cracked - it would be absolutely wonderful if you could get the hatcher/brooder set up for your county fair. It was standing before the hatcher with my son at the State Fair in 2000, for two hours, watching chickens hatch - that got me started with chickens at our house. Just think of how many chicken flocks you could get started?

I think that the Oklahoma State Fair has one or more people arranged ahead of time who receive the hatched chicks. I don't think they sell theirs. The State Fair in OKC uses all the same kind of eggs. I think they are acquired from the OSU extension office, just like most schools who "check out" an incubator from the OSU extension center for their kindergarten classes, get eggs from the OSU extension center. The OSU extension center in Oklahoma County supplies eggs that hatch broilers. (I have been the lucky recipient of the hatched chicks from one of the local schools for the past 4 years)

I doubt they have a permit... that was never mentioned!

Well, if my keeping chickens depended on my neighbors not complaining, I would walk softly on this issue.

But you are right. There is something wrong with this picture when someone can own something like a potentially destructive wild animal as a pet, and you must have your neighbors' blessings to own harmless chickens.

There have been instances where people have successfully tamed raccoons, but they are still wild animals and thus unpredictable. People sometimes "tame" lions, but I wouldn't want one next door to me.

Ahhhh...Neecy, that brings back some "long" ago memories.
My brother and I were just little kids and mother broke the
bank and took us to the Tulsa State Fair....LOL Once we got
to the "baby critter area".....she was "stuck"....LOL Then,
we finally made it to the cattle barn and there was a cow down,
having a calf, and she was "stuck" again...LOL And, we were
in-town kids...... We stood there laughing through our tears
watching that poor little calf trying to get to its feet.............

Which fair are you talking about? As far as eggs, Please take
some Langshans...LOL Obviously they are fertile and if they
don't stop putting them in the incubator, someone's gonna
have a knot on their head!

And, the "bug" bit......I read it to Pa-Pa and he said he had
seen a "rhinocerous" (sp) beetle a couple of days ago and
hadn't seen one in years around here. So, will be watching
for another. Would be up to you to find out what it's "real"
name is.........LOL

Did you see my earlier post about mid-July? Are you guys
still gonna be down here? Hope you get to feeling better
soon.

Al - doing fine here.

Have a good one !

Neecy - be prepared for a bombardment of insects and eggs! You get it arranged and you can count on as many quail eggs as you can get. Ireally like the idea of selling them in the premium and putting the money back into the deal for the kids. Just watch out...around here if you mess with the premium deal folks get all unglued! You can count me in for bidding on bantam chicks!

Instead of freezing (this will crack stuff and cause it to be nasty! Go ahead and advise folks to just throw itin a box.

I have a rhino beetle coming from my Mom! Sorry you can't have this one it is going in the classroom. I will get her to catch some stuff from South Texas...she is a nerd, too!

Oh yeah...you need the place of capture (county, city, and such), who caught it and capture date. Shaun can do the hard part looking up the scientific names!!! Be prepared...you can't usually get exact on them as you gotta cut stuff open and examine stuff on some to determine species

YES, Shaun made the all star team so we will definatley be there in July. The dates are 18th, 19th and 20th. We will have to plan a lunch or something on of those days. I will have to see how the schedule goes as far as when the team plays.

YES!! Do find that beetle!! It's real name is the rhino (only spelled all the way out!) beetle and I have never seen one. The females are brown and the males are a geenish grey with spots. We can pick up any bugs from you when we come down.

YES! Langshan eggs would be GREAT!! I will check and make sure that I will still have time to get the little boogers to hatch for the fair. It is going on the third week of August and it's the Ottawa County Fair.

I was talking earlier how nice it was outside because of the rain.
I LIED!!
I think I could swim out there now!
I really wanted to go over to 4H day camp today and show them how to candle eggs but after just taking the dogs to pee I am bushed. I think I am going to take some Advil and go back to bed for a bit.

Hey Teach THANKS!!
Our premium sale is sacred here too. We only have about 26-27 steers entered every year in the fair but 25 of them make the sale.
barnie.gif
We have 30-50 sheep and 25 make the sale. We have 150 meat goats entered and 5 make the sale???
th.gif
25 pigs make the sale with close to 300 enteries. No poultry, no dairy cows or goats, and no heifers. I have spoke my opinion several times to the fair board but the good ol'boys don't want to rock the boat with the people that spend the money on the kids animals.
Here our kids get to keep thier animal after the sale.

The fair starts August 17th and runs through the 22nd. So I will need to set up the hatches run all week.
I thought quail might be fun because I heard when they start to hatch it is like popcorn.
Maybe I could plan differnt species for diffent days. Quail the first part of the week. Chickens the middle and ducks the last part.
What about a sign by the hatcher/brooder about this being a 4H project and all of the eggs was dontated and if they would like to purchase the birds or make a donation the can contact Neecy at BR549?

The brooder/hatcher looks like the one at the Tulsa State Fair 5-6 foot long and about 5 foot tall. Glass on 2 sides divided in half. Hatching on top and brooding on the bottom.

Tossing them in the freezer is just a neat way of killing them. You can also use a baby food jar with cotton balls wetted with finger nail polish remover(the kind with acetone). I am weird when it comes to killing the bugs. I just would rather toss them in the freezer for 24 hours so I don't have to listen to it scratch on the box or bottle. That creeps me out, REALLY BAD!!
We can do the ID'ing if you send them to us. And you are excatly right he needs capture date, location and by who(m).

SEND US BUGS!! Even if it is common in your area it may not be here. If we get duplicates NO WORRY we can share with the other 4 H'ers.
Big bugs, little bugs, bugs that climb on rocks. Fat bugs, skinny bugs, even bugs with hairy polka dots.

Thanks everybody I KNEW I could count on my Okie buddies!!
