As a practical matter however, any that actually hatch more than 2 days after day 21 have had mushy bellies and didn't thrive. You might consider opening one to see if there is a nasty odor to the developed chick and observe whether there is still liquid inside the egg.

I opened one and fully developed chick inside...no odor..but very muscous..if thats a word

Busy and productive afternoon.

Tried out one of my burners and my trashcan scalder this afternoon (which worked like a charm, BTW). DW and I finished off the last two of our BB White turkeys and two of our seven White Rock hens. We tag teamed... I killed, she eviscerated, we both plucked, I cleaned up the area and equipment, she chilled, tagged and bagged.

What a romantic way to spend a Sunday afternoon with the one you love!

Buster that is great that you are almost done! Sounds like a great way to spend the day to me, beats building fence! I told him this is the last time I am moving this fence (for the thrid time). I did manage to get to play with my chickens. Let the Cochins out on the grass for alittle while, changed out the babies cage(I'm trying the pine pellets) and got the second does of wormer out for everyone else.

Grace you give me too much credit!

Henny hang in there girl, Dr. Les will get your girls right as rain.

Dashsunds I am glad that you have had a safe trip! You guys must of got on the road early today! We will hold down the fort till your next trip! Thanks for the shake if I did'nt already say it. ***Anytime you want to make quilts I am always in need!***LOL.

Man, I hate fence work. We are getting ready to do some fencing to get ready for our goat project, and I need to run electric all the way around our property to train our Pyrs before they get so big they don't feel it. Fast as they are growing that could be any day now.

By getting done with these BB Whites, I was able to let the next batch of our Bourbon Reds out of their tractor to join the teenagers. That's one less bit of work to do every morning. Just looked out my picture window to see all of them silhouetted against the pond. That is one pretty sight.

One turkey left to do this year... a Naragansette. When we are done we only want one breed of turkey on our place. He will be probably some time in December.

Next up is our Dark Cornish, though, our meat bird of choice. They are filling out very nicely.

Have fun with that fence!

Hi all. I just got home a bit ago and been taking care of chickens. Looks like Mr. Coon came visiting. I lost a few birds but not as many as I could have. I have all the traps set so I am hoping I get the guy tonight.
I am ten pages and 700 posts behind so it will take me a while to catch up.
I probably won't even try much tonight.
If I missed anyuthing exciting let me know.
Monty

That is a word that I understand, sounds like the humidity was indeed too high and they drowned. Before I hit on the dry incubation method I was loseing a lot of chicks like that especially in the summer when humidity levels are so high anyway. Couldn't figure that out, I could hatch anythinmg in winter but not in summer.

And I did forget what P&B hit on. Always wash eggs in water warmer then they are, it is supposed to draw the bacteria out of the pores of the eggs.

Henny whenever you dose something with meds give them a good full dose and run it a little longer then the bird appears sick. That way there is less chance for the snarkie to devolop resistance to what you are using. May be time to hit the coop with some Oxine too as we are having warm days.

I am here! The party can begin
