OEC newsletter came today! Here's the chicken ads:

Rhode Island Red bantam roosters; 7 adult pairs of mallard ducks. (405) 527-4348

Based on advice from others, I am seeking out the advice from the folks that check out this list since I am an Okie. (I posted my initial questions under 'General Breeds - Backyard Chicken Wannabe'...you can check that one out for more info)

My main question has to do with breed. I am not exactly sure which to go with. I am not planning on breeding or showing the hens. I don't expect them to supply all of my families egg needs, but some eggs would be appreciated. I don't want really large hens since we don't have tons of space. My wife would probably say that she wants them to be pretty but I am less concerned about that. They will be kept in a coop most of the time but might be allowed to roam when I am at home and in the garden. For the coop, I am thinking of building the movable type that I can move around the yard and garden.

So if anyone has any advice on a good breed to go with, I am all ears (or in the case, eyes I guess...sorry. Just my attempt at being funny.)

So you are open to anything, but don't want anything *haha* If they're going to be free range, I would go with standard size. The cats never even looked at the standards the neighbors had, but the banties didn't last long at all.

Standards are alot bigger, though. Leghorns are decent egg layers, pretty common, and don't get as large as some of the other standard breeds. That's just my idea, anyway. Good luck picking a breed, and welcome to the board!

pvhouse: You could ask ten people and probably get ten answers on what breeds to get.
First off do you said you live in Jenks. Do you know the city ordinances on what if any chickens you can have? Each place varies. You would be surprised about "big" chcckens, they aren't any more trouble, probably less so than smaller ones which are more flighty.
Try going to feathersite.com and look at the hundreds of breeds they have there.
Here are my suggestions for you. Ameracaunas, Brahmas. Barred Rocks, Buff Orpingtons, Wyandottes ( there different colors), red and black sex links, production reds, rhode island reds, Marans, and Welsummers,( my favorite).
If you want something different try Polish or some of the top hat breeds.
Some people like Silkies but they can be very broody which is not a good thing unles you want to raise chicks.
When you look at the breeds pick out what you like and then ask here again about what we think about them.
It is really about personal preference.
I try new breeds all the time. If I like them I keep some around.
I currently have welsummers, buff orpingtons, production reds, OEGs, black giants, Gold Campines, blue Andalusians, an Easter egger, and many crosses.
I plan on more and different breeds this year.

Cammie, Hello! I thought everyone had abandoned me. I would love to go to the cement auction but I won't be able to tomorrow. I am still wanting Welsummers and Marans but I wouldn't expect you to get them for me. Thanks for offeering though.

HI buckguy.move is done.......well....I am in new place.....ducks with me,no chickens yet.tomorrow we do chicken pens........... and I still have tons to move and pack at old place.... I feel better already !

Glad that you got moved and are feeling better!

Too bad my Light Brahma isn't a roo, I'd let you have it. So pretty much pick a banty roo that looks good, especially if its one of those breeds? I'm not planning on spending more than $12 on anything, so don't worry. I didn't realize you had so many breeds! You Japanese is all black?

We should all agree to get AIM or Yahoo messenger or something. *haha*

Is it much of an adjustment?
I'm sure I can find you an extra Bantam rooster down here, if you still need one at a time we could meet up at some poultry show.
