They are BB Rd Rosecombs, but they need work. I'm going to have to cross back to Rosecomb to fix the comb, lobes, and tail.

P&B save this link. The thermo cube is only 12.50 here.

As for your deep litter method. I am not sure this will be my first year using them. I have read the post from the others that have used them with no trouble. I will most likely lay out two flat concrete blocks (not the two hole cinder blocks) with the tin on top of that then the waterer.

Thanks Sooner and Carla - I bookmarked the link. I use a lot of the 2 and 4 quart rubber tubs with my rabbits and have decided I like the Miller brand better than the other kind, and this company carries the brand I like. I think placing the water heater on a couple of concrete blocks, like paving stones, would be a good way to keep the heater out of the wood shavings.

I use the large, 6 gallon rubber tubs for chickens that are old enough to drink from them without falling in. In the winter, I can take a spade and break the top layer of ice pretty easily. If it gets too frozen, I turn it over and using the heel of my boot, stomp the bottom of rubber tub to empty out the ice. I tend to keep the water dish outside, except on the coldest of days, so the sun can hit it and thaw it out some in the afternoon.

In the past, I have used the plastic 3-5 gallon waterers with screw off lids, but over the years the sun has deteriorated the red hexagon pan at the bottom and cracked the plastic pans. I still use them sometimes by putting them in a metal feed pan.

How old are they? Silkies mature later than most others; maybe they just aren't mature yet. Once they start, you'll be asking how to get them to stop!

Morning all you enablers!lol

Wow Buckguy I can't believe no one jumped on that pair of shamo bantams! I bet Teach would if he were around. I sure would if I was back there.I'm sure likeing this pair of aseel bantams I have. I only hope I am right and they are bantams. The hens are as big as regular game hens only longer in leg and much stockier.

Anyone heard how Teaches dad is? Prayers going out for the family.

Okay, "rubber tub" takes in quite a range of containers. Could someone link to one or post a picture of one that they use for chickens? Thanks.

I have found my turkeys much prefer deep containers over typical "feeders" and "waterers". They like to stick their beaks way down for eating and drinking. We look for pots and pans at yard sales for a quarter or two apiece.

I was reminded this morning of something Stimpy recently wrote.

I've been curious why these big White Rock pullets I bought from a friend hadn't started laying yet. I know these are supposed to be big birds but dang. How big do they have to get before they start laying??

While I was out this morning feeding and watering all the critters, one of those big pullets belted out the loudest, prettiest crow you could imagine. Or maybe I should say, "pullets". Okay. So one of the pullets is a rooster. I then looked around at the rest of them to see the difference between a WR hen and a roo. There wasn't one. A difference, I mean.

They were all roosters.

Suddenly, I felt much better about my decision to downsize.

Jim : Mine have started laying but very sporadicly, you should certainly be able to tell the Roos just as fast as any other breed, they do stand out. Stimpy say's they can be finicky about laying but once they settle in ???, they do well.

If the eggs continue to be infertile, then I'd look to swap roosters. If the eggs are still infertile, it's the hen. We did have some rainy & cool weather lately, like Mike said. Sometimes that does mess up the fertility a bit.

Ok, so when she lays a few more, I will set them in the incubator to see. If that does not work, anyone have a BBR oegb adult roo they wanna sell, or loan or swap?
