OK I just found some new breed of birds for my flock and wanted to get a opinion on the information that was given to me, the first is a Trio of Belgian Quail D'Anver Bantams born Febuary of this year they are buff colored with black and the rooster had a 2 colored beard and he is wanting $25 for the trio.
The second is a pair of Mille Fleur Bantams hatched in Febaury from Murray McMurray hatchery eggs and he said that they were traditional color and wants $20 for the pair. I have not seen any of these birds and was wandering if these descriptions sound right?

Thanks so much. I'm really glad you came and hung out. It's so much fun with so many already knowing each other.

Are you going to be bringing your kiddos to Shawnee? It would be great for you and your family to start making the shows. Of course, Sooner, your family is included in that plea too!

We might need some "Okies in the BYC Road Crew" t-shirts!

Grace, I am looking at the Shawnee Catalog. The Junior Awards are supposed to be given at 8 am on Sunday morning. Depending on what time you go to church you might be able to make it back in time. It sure would be nice for you to get to show your Cochins and Silkies...

That's a loaded question!

There are so many different thoughts on how to handle hatching eggs.

Personally, I keep my at room temperature (@ my house that's 70-85 degrees) on the kitchen countertop in an egg turner. If they are really dirting, I wash them and spray with Tek-trol.

Some swear by putting them in the refrigerator first but most say no. Some will not wash an egg (if it's dirty enough to need washing they don't set it).

Hope this helps & good luck.

I have read in the past that it only takes 80 deg for a few hours to start an egg to devolop. I started keeping mine in the frige after that and my hatches are more even, not stung out over a day or two. As long as an egg doesn't freeze the embryo will still devolop just fine. A friend keeps hers in a wine cooler at around 60 deg.

Just a thought

Those ladies are at Shawnee every year and if I remember right the parent stock for her birds come from the best in the country.

Used to be the Silkies were on the back row just as you go through the doors to the snack bar and there were only very few of them there. And talk about some homely birds too, they were not near as nce as the birds that are there now.

If you want my HONEST opinion...

Are you thinking about getting these for your kids to show? If you are, watch out for the quality. Find someone to give you an idea of what to look for. Most hatchery birds aren't going to do real well at the regular shows. There's some tough competition even in the Juniors. Since you are planning on going to Shawnee, check the birds that are for sale there. If your kids are with you while asking about them, breeders generally will make you a better deal. Always bring the kids though!!!

The prices in my opinion are pretty typical. Although, you might be able to find even cheaper birds at the show.

And remember, if you get them we always love pictures!

I'm finally home from spending the day babysitting my granddaughter. Poor baby is running a fever, sneezing and coughing. My daughter & son-in-law don't have any paid leave available so grandma came to the rescue. I was worried though that I might pass on Gerald's virus, since I ache all over now too, but my daughter said she had a really bad headache and aches & fever over the weekend, so I guess it's probably the same virus. I just hope it is, and poor Ashlyn doesn't get this virus after she has the bad cold virus. Oh, I just hate to see a poor baby suffer. I had to hold her the whole day or she'd start crying & she couldn't drink from the bottle because she'd start choking since her nose is stuffed up. I took her to the pediatrician and was told to just give her motrin, benadryl & pedialyte and if she still has a fever tomorrow to bring her back & she'd test her for the flu & start her on Tamiflu. Well heck, we're already doing all that .... so she needs to suffer another day & then have to go back to the doctor for another appointment

OK, maybe she just has a cold & not the flu.

Gerald is feeling a little better. He had to feed all the birds by himself today and complained that it sure took him a lot longer since he doesn't feel good. Speaking of not feeling good ... I feel very tired & achey now & think I probably have a milder version of what Gerald had. I called in sick at work though, so I can hit the sack earlier.

I put them in a cardboard egg carton with the lid cut off, for air circulation, and just use a 2x2 to prop up one end of the carton twice a day. With the egg in suspended animation all you need to do is to keep the yolk from settling.

You ought to let Corey show one variety of Moderns, and Liz show the others... that way you will at least have the required "two exhibitors"

That's too bad Kendra's birds sold for so much... at least she must know how to pick 'em!

I talked to Echo and her mom at Eufaula, about my Japanese... I'm glad she has some now

Shamos are more of an adult breed anyway. Just tell your girls that!

Shawnee does have money prizes, though (well, most shows do!) so you should be able to earn back some or most of the entry fees.

Okay.....
The Quail d'Anvers sound fine, as in, their coloring sounds correct.
But with the "Mille Fleur Bantams" I think he got confused in his description. d'Uccle was most likely the breed he meant, and by "traditional color" he probably meant that they were the Mille Fleur variety. It's common to hear the d'Uccle breed called Mille Fleurs. But, asuming that's what he has, $20 sounds like a good price! I would go for them
