Well I looked at their website and it is impressive.

Pastured products are the way to go because as everyone knows its the input costs, fuel, fert. seed etc., that can either make or break a farm operation. A pastured poultry operation would yield much healthier stock at a much lower input cost plus if done correctly would also leave the land itself in a much better condition.

I predict in the future that we are going to see more co-ops spring up and the shift will be back to the smaller operations for animal raising. Of course on the grain side of the spectrum there will still be large operations as it doesn't take all that many people or a lot of equipment to cover a lot of acres in a day.

I agree totally you have to find ways to be effieciant in order to be profitable, but my thing is it's really nothing new. I too think Co-ops are on the upswing as a way for the little guy to enter the market place. But with all of the really smaller newer mini farms/hobbie farms I think it's impact will be limited.

Salatin is the king of backyard meat chicken raising. If somebody wants to raise quality chickens for the table in an easy manner, his stuff is the best. You need to read his book to see what I mean. We have it at the Lawton library, if you are interested. I don't agree with him 100% (I think he is wrong about the Cornish X), but his plan is about the best out there. Easy to follow and easy to do.

I haven't had a single predator loss from my tractor raised birds outside of a snake sneaking in and killing a couple of poults, and then it was my fault for leaving the top open.

Sorry Jim I should have known before we started talkin about this self appointed Guru that you would weigh in good buddy. LOL yes I did grow up on concrete but have lived in the country going on 20+ yrs so I think thats enough time to form an opinion albeit not a popular one. I think his meathodology and implementation are fine, but he is by no means the first to try it or the king of anything. My wife Laura's family has been in the chicken business for decades and I have learned allot from them over the years. It's just this whole Cult movement following he is fostering is what I don't get. I still love ya Bro no harm no fowl.

Popping in to report I have 10 eggs in the nest boxes, with hopes for a couple more! I only have 12 clucks so I will not pray for 13 eggs today, but I just gotta say I'm really happy with this. Thanks Pepper and EngieKisses for telling me about Tulsa Feeds - I finally made it over there a couple of weeks ago and I think this 20% feeder/layer is really making a difference compared to the 15% layer from Atwoods they've been on up to now.

OK no more smack talking Al!!! I just got back from setteling in the new birds of the day!! I got my Brahmas 2 cockerels and 3 Pullets, then the Favorelles I got 8 cockerels and 13 pullets!! The cult type of thing is easy to get for me. After all, these people are stuck in a cubicle every day and thinking that there just has to be more to life. Especially after Wall street wiped out their 401k accounts and there is so much uncertainty every where and they just want something to grasp, something that they can do and be proud of that will help lessen their dependence on the big boys.

Salatin is just one of the only ones out there offering answers.
