I really would have liked wood for another coop)

Well since you got a gift card for the nails surely you can get some wood for the coops.

Wrong kind of nails. Can't buy nails for the coop at the salon

For someone who isn't feeling very good, your brain sure is alert for "plays on words."

Same here Marybeth...however it's an improvement over getting 1 egg out of 30 layers. LOL At least getting enough to make a cake. Aah...nothing like spending 5 bucks a day for feed to get 1/2 dozen eggs in return when we could go buy several dozen instead.

Can we say addiction?

I will start doing my breeding pens tomorrow and start increasing light, changing their feed and all that stuff and I will probably start hatching in another thirty days or so.

what will you do differently regarding feed?

the only thing that comes to mind for me (not knowing for sure the size of the bucket) would be a flower pot bottom, you know that the water drains in. also would the lg cookie tin be large enough??? plastic cup cake carrier?

sorry that is all my tired & rib occupied mind can come up with.

I have you both beat. ZERO eggs from over 50 hens.
People don't believe me when I tell them that all of my roosters lay as well as my hens and that I get as many eggs from them as I do from my best laying hens.

I spent $30 bucks on feed today and almost $2 bucks a dozen for eggs. I wasn't happy.

Donna : I still have the big feeders in the small pens, it just means you don't fill them as often, no big deal it doesn't take anything more to make the big ones as it does the small ones.

Along with an increase in light you also need to boost the protien and fat level in their feed. That way they don't have to try to keep warm and produce eggs too which is hard on their systems.

Through the winter I swap to a 18% layer feed and suppliment it with alfalfa pellets at about a 25% Alfalfa and 75% layer feed.

Carah...the problem with those items is there are no sides to catch and hold the feed. I could probably clean my cabinets out and find something...killing two birds with one stone. Has anyone else made the smaller feeders? I would love to know what you used.
