We had a little freezing drizzle that made the roads bad for a while last night but then the wind dried everything out.
We never lost power but the lights dimmed and the tv messed up some. I think there were around 30,000 in the OKC area without power.

Do you have a CDIB (Certificate of Degree of Indian Blood)? Choctaws have higher education programs and career development programs that help with getting Masters & above.

Hi Tara, I moved my Hamburg hens in with the handsome Cubalaya. He loves the attention. The blue Minorcas I have with him weren't that happy though. They want him for themselves.
Those Minorcas are a selfish breed.
The other hens line up at his gate and just look at him a swooon.

momofthree!! Like Buckguy said, we move fast in this thread so jump right in! Since your coop isn't finished, can we assume that you have chicks in the house? Or is your Chicken Strategy still in the planning/scheming on the breeds and number you plan to acquire? And what kind of milk do you go to Claremore to get?

Glad you're here!! BYC is a great site and you will learn tons - although we mostly just chat on this thread, we do have some very highly knowledgeable chicken people who can answer most any question you may have, and out on the main forum you can find answers and ideas on just about anything chicken! Have fun!

Oh yes! all the threads in this place go fast!! i have been having to limit my time

Basically, we were just able to buy 10 acres just two miles from where we are now, even though right now we are on 1.3 acres in the country. just last week, we tore down a barn that dh is going to revamp into a chicken coop, we are planning for it to be approximately 12x16 and as soon as that is done, along with a good sized run, we will get the chicks. We aren't out at the 10 acres yet, we are waiting for our house to sell and then build again out there. I think i have narrowed it down to mainly wanting the RIRs and Barred Rocks for egg laying but i also want a couple of hens that tend to be broody to hatch out some eggs to keep the flock going. I have three kids and i want some to be friendly to the kids, i know my son will want to hold some, so i want a few of the really docile hens also. I just haven't made up my mind on what type of rooster or two to get. i want to keep egg production up in the hatched chickens, but i don't want a mean roo like RIR would be....i am thinking of maybe an EE or a Light Sussex for a roo. I don't care really on what type of crosses i get, color wise, or anything, just want to keep egg production high.

We are also getting the land ready for a couple of Dexter cattle and i am trying to talk dh into miniature donkeys!

There are three of us who to go Claremore to get raw milk from Swan's Bro. Dairy. It is GREAT milk, so we go in rotation, each taking our week and we get milk for all three families, because it is a good 30 minute drive from us one way. They have great cheese there also. If you get the chance, stop by there and grab some, you will be addicted!! I have seen no many health benefits in my lactose intolerant (previously, i guess i should say) daughter, as she can tolerate the raw milk and have no side effects at all.

Ha! The blood is long gone, and I asked if the vet could please sharpen his teeth - maybe fit him with some razored caps...

He certainly is a pretty boy!

Has his tail stayed low or did it lift any? It hadn't fully grown out when I gave him to you. His brothers have tails above horizontal, but one of his sisters took more to the cubalaya side (low set tail), so I wondered if he would do the same.

Neato! Sounds like your farm plan is well underway. In my little downtown flock, both the Barred Rock hens and the RIR hens are friendly and don't mind being picked up much. Like you, I go for egg production (but we had Leghorns when I was growing up and I hated chickens then!) The Barred Rocks are maybe more curious than the all the others. I don't have a rooster, but my folks use a Barred Rock rooster over their White Leghorns and have found him to be much friendlier than the Leghorn roo they used to have. I think rooster behaviour might be more of an individual trait rather than a breed trait - others who have more experience will know better.

When I was growing up we milked cows (just a few by hand) and I really miss raw milk. We had lots of customers, too! I do think it is an extremely healthy food and is much much different than the watered down stuff they sell in the grocery stores. Raw milk homemade ice cream is the best!!

Hi momofthree...welcome to the asylum...don't turn your back on the inmates!

It was 0 when I went out and did the hens. waited till about 9:00... their water didn't even freeze!! Most hens are hiding in the coops out of the wind. And are they are jazzed that I laid that straw down. They have made little hidey holes to huddle up in....nerds.....all ya can see are little red combs peeking up out of the holes everywhere...lol. I know there are gonna be eggs everywhere but the nest boxes!!

We got nothing as far as precip so hubby got to stay in and warm... was relieved about that. I'm trying to decide if I wanna go visit my mom or huddle up and get some paperwork done. I really wanna go cut wood!! I am warming up with a cup of joe with Mike's white chocolate raspberry creamer. He has been making coffee in the morning the last couple of days and I just can't walk away!!!
