I have raised Buff Orpingtons a couple of times and although they are wonderful broody hens, I am not impressed with their egg laying abilities. They are good mothers but if you aren't careful, they tend to get too fat to lay eggs (will still visit the nest

) and in the summer heat, I lost several one year to apparent heart attacks. My one buff orphington hen is going to the zoo tomorrow, to run around in the children's petting area that is opening this Spring. I don't anticipate any decrease in the egg production of my hen house as the result of her absence.

Good evening all!!.... I just stopped by long enough to see what everyone was up to...

We have a big day planned for tomorrow getting critters ready for the storm. We are debating if we are just going to go ahead and move the rest of the bantams into the garage until it passes. I like my pens and in general they do really good but I am so ready to start building the new pens and get everybody in them. I already have several breeds in my garage it isnt even funny anymore, just a big maze making sure everybody is sorted so we dont have mixed breeds and varieties. the new pens we build will be equipped with lights and heaters so there will be no more fussing. I will be able to turn on the lights and heaters seperate of each other and only have what I want on if I want it on at all. It will be nice!!!

She is in Kansas ,Ok.Also have dear friend of ours who was sent home today with hospice. She is dying of breast cancer. We will be making a trip back in a few days for the funeral I'm sure. Taco Soup
2 pkg taco seasoning
chopped onion
cooked chicken
canned beans - about any variety will work, I like black beans or chili beans or kidney beans
frozen corn or canned hominy
canned chopped tomatoes
chicken broth
crushed tortilla chips

I fill the crockpot about 1/3 full of water, add powdered chicken broth and the taco seasoning and all the rest of the ingredients. Proportions are not particularly important, but you want a lot of stuff so it is more like a thick stew than a thin soup. The tortilla chips help thicken it.

Cook for a few hours on low to blend the flavors. Serve in a bowl with crushed tortilla chips in the bottom and topped with sour cream and shredded cheddar cheese.

Uno is a Naragansett turkey. He is a 2002 model and is mainly a pet. I have 3 hens and another tom, so hope to have some poults this Spring.
Carla was advertising her extra Naragansett toms on Craigslist this past week. Other than Uno, all my Naragansetts have come from Carla.
