I haven't found any good pic's yet, but there's a few shown in this brochure from South Carolina Coop, along with lots of other good info on plasticulture farming. http://www.ces.ncsu.edu/depts/hort/consumer/agpubs/ag-489.pdf

Oh
and one thing that was discussed at the plasticulture convention we went to .... there was a guy discussing the best fertilizer .... he recommended chicken litter over any other !!!!! We have lots of that at our house!

Gosh, I don't know if we can get up that early, but I'll mention it to Gerald. I just love going to Mary's Swap Meet & running around & looking at everything for sale

.... and I always gravitate toward the row of critters for sale. I just hope the rain doesn't begin until after Saturday.

Have you every tried wearing one of those paper masks with the ventilation filter in the middle? I can't breath well enough with a solid paper mask, but have to wear a mask when doing major cleaning in the coop or I am unable to breath for several days afterwards. When I see how filthy the paper mask is, I realize how much it kept out of my lungs. If you buy them a dozen at a time at a paint supply store, they are much less expensive than if you buy them one at a time at the hardware store.

The dust generally doesn't bother me much, but lately I have been suffering from severe bronchitis. I went to the doctor and got some meds but they don't seem to be helping any. I have to wait until Monday to call, becauswe the doctor's office is closed on Friday. I didn't know this because I just switched to this doctor. I got a new insurance and was forced to get a new doctor. My usual doctor doesn't accept Cigna.

Anyways back to the question at hand. I have not tried the masks. I usually can't stand something over my face. I'm not usually chlosterphobic, but I can be persuaded when you cover my face.

Carla,
I didn't get this group of maran hatching eggs in the incubator until 1/29, so today is actually the day they should be hatching. Of course, I didn't write myself a note on the date the quail eggs went into the incubator - I just know it was several days after the maran eggs, so they could still hatch as well. In the meantime, there is one cheerful maran chick sitting all by his lonesome in the incubator.

Y'all brought me assorted maran eggs last week and they are in the big incubator. So I think that I will have plenty. Thank you for your kind offer.

Do you ship? Cuz...I could use some of them as well!

Never tried, but probably could once I figured out how to do it.

Mealies are really easy to raise- fill a bin with oatmeal and cornmeal and toss in a couple sliced potatoes, go buy about 500 or so and toss them in- they do the rest...

how did you manage to get a rare breed like Dorkings at Atwoods? I am impressed.

Sometimes all the stars line up and things happen, I tried last year to hatch a few Dz and only got 2 out of about 36 eggs and they died
So today I got all they had..Of course I am hoping for 12 girls.

It could happen

Well, you should hope for at least one rooster... then you can make more

But I'm glad you were able to get back into chickens, and get a breed you really wanted at the same time!

spent the whole day redoing the roosts in the coop- lowering them, it all started with routine cleaning, then one thing led to another- because i had a fight over the nest box, nothing new- but i decided to do it all- only i didn't get new nest boxes done, but i lowered and increased the number of roosts- only they weren't very appreciative! dave came in when they were settling down for the night and i had three on me, cause i was higher that the roosts..

so i am seriously tired!

hey sooner, how is CT doing?
