I like to wean mine off the higher wattage bulbs as early as possible. I'll keep the heat on them the first few days to a week and then I switch to lower wattage bulbs (i.e. 100 watts to 60 watts, then to 34 watts, and I'll use a CFL as they start feathering out and the weather warms up).

sorry to hear about the lost chicks...

why did Yonna sale her chickens?? She said her friend loved them and had a nice empty pen,fenced off and covered. Plus she gets to buy more.... Why did my uncle give them 150 chicks?? Why did I take them? Why are we buying yet more chickens?

We are getting eggs! We've been getting eggs from the reds for awhile now. This weekend the brahma's started laying and today we got our first japanese egg (very very tiny). Now what will we ever do with them all!

the brahma eggs would be crossed with prod red. I doubt the jap egg is fertile from what I've read. I'm sure when caitlin gets her sq japs and rir we will get an incubator and get busy.

OMG.....I've had 65 out of 72 fuzzy butts hatch out today. I was so shocked when I got home and went to look in the bator. Got a fancy dinner to go to tonight with DH...he has been asked to be a part of the Gideons and we got to get some fancy duds on for that . I told him we then have to come home and fix the home for all those fuzzy butts. I've got black sex links and I forgot what the others were. LOL
