Yeah that really bites, what the heck can a guy do with 5 chickens, it's like only eating the crust of a Samich, just not right.

Thanks Steph - I'll add you and Carl to the list - are you bringing kids?

I dont think so... unless any decide to come later. They asked me last year when they seen the pictures where we were and why they didnt get to go.... I told them, I asked if you wanted to go, you said no, and this is where we went. So they might decide to come later but for now it is just me and Carl.

It really just depends on the size of them and how they have been bred as to how good of layers they are. I have Silver's that are alittle bigger than my goldens and they are a little better layers than my goldens. As for the rooster it just depends on their temperment. I had a golden sebright rooster that I could stick babies in the pen and never have to worry about them, but with the rooster I have now I wouldnt do that. Sorry, I dont think this helps much, but with all chickens its just the luck of the draw on their temperment and their laying abilities.

Actually it does help.. I have goldens, My rooster is very gentle but when they start breeding I'll see how his attitude is then. They aren't acting as if they care yet...
one of the silkie hens is starting to lay now, the rest of the girls.. both breeds aren't, they are the same age so I'm hoping they will start soon.

Shavon, the rooster was a BLUE game and the hens were RIR. With 3 'bators it would take 9-12 dozen to fill them. Let me know if and how many you want.

Sooner, I was busy and Doc just wouldn't shut up.

Al, you were promoted last night but you just didn't know it.

Thanks Al - I only wish you were closer to me - I have some Big Projects you would be just The Man for! She is in a book "100 Tulsa Historic Homes." She has quite a history - there was a tunnel running from my basement down to the Arkansas river, where Mr. Rose the Bootlegger once smuggled booze. (Said tunnel has been filled in for years, and NO! I am not going to excavate!)

Nope, the 3 acres where the house and my chickens are does not perk very well. So if I tried something like that it would be hard to judge flow and retention, would probably end up drowning chickens.

Finally got caught up with reading posts from last night and this morning - Faerie, that is beautiful and well worth the time and effort you have put into it.

I am really looking for pure RIR to start a breeding program. I have RIR and RIR cross eggs here, but I wanted to bring in another line. I am down to 3 pure RIR hens, 3 BSL hens, and 3 RIRxBSL pullets. They are good layers and tend to be fairly sweet. My only rooster is a big mean RIR. Actually he learned his lesson. When my daughter was tossing some BOSS to him he decided to attack. I took the dog's tennis ball and tossed it at him. I can't throw a ball and never hit the target, but somehow that ball connected with his head. I thought I had killed him and didn't care if I had. He dropped to the ground and laid there for about 10 minutes. He has kept his distance from DD and I ever since. He has never attacked DH or DS, only us girls. He has attacked DD and I more than 10 times each. I have tried rehabilitating him nicely, but he is stubborn. Now I just throw something at him and he runs away. This is the only time I actually hit him.

Dude. Move to Tulsa - here you can have 6 chickens! Also, there is a big hole in the "Coming to POOPS" list where your name should be....so are you going to be there Saturday May 1? (the correct answer is "yes!")
