You might check with Chiclooker regarding the Buff Orphingtons. They have a NPIP certified flock and have acquired some huge Buff Orphingtons at auctions.

Ok guys, I am totally bummed:hit

Some type of predator got into my chicken coop last night. Because of my broken leg and the distance to the coop I cannot make it out there. My daughter and husband have been taking care of them lately. Drew was at work so the datails are still pretty sketchy since they came from my very upset 16 year old daughter.

This is what I can gather: I have 6 dead hens, one is completely missing it's head and neck, the other 4 have very mauled heads around the eyes especially but they are still attached. A 7th hen is completely missing. There is another hen and a rooster that have injuries around the head.

The coop has a 7 to 8 foot high fence surrounding it, it is buried under the ground in cement as are the walls of the coop. What kind of predator do you think it was and what suggestions do you have to prevent another attack?

I am having my daughter take pics of the coop door and the surrounding area as that is the only place that I can even think that may have allowed something access. I would appreciate opinions on what can be done to make it more secure.

I lost two of my three EEs, a red star or a buff orphington, and 3 black star or black Australorps. Daughter isn't sure about positive id....I will have to wait on Drew to come home for that.

I would definitely like to replace my blue egg layers and get a couple of feather-footed Cuckoo Marans (Silver, I think). Can anyone help with that?

very nice way to use reusable products... see who needs the fad of going green... we were all green before they hyped it up to be a cool thing... kinda like I was country before country was cool... said in my best Barbara Mandrell voice... ha ha

Ok I made myself get out in the sun and gasp in shorts... I think I blinded my chickens though with my white ol legs that I swear the geese were putting on shades. I figured I am gonna die some day and I cant allow the sun to keep me from enjoying the out doors( besides I think Jer Man thought I was a woos because I wouldnt go outside when he was helping Jason a few weeks ago on tearing up our roof,) during a some what decent hot day... so I did the deed got me shorts on(which I never wear any ways) and mowed the property... and lets just say that I remembered to wear a cap, and sunscreen my face... the rest can be left up to imagination but once I was done I look like a nice lil pink lobster....

I suspect a raccoon. An electric fence (Hotwire) at top and bottom of the fence should keep them out. another alternative is to wait at night until they make another raid and exterminate them with extreme prejudice with a firearm, crossbow, bow, or high power airgun (Benjamin Discovery, Benjamin Marauder etc... NOT walmart special). I have a cousin that raises pheasants and had a raccoon problem, and after eliminating the raccoon he said it tasted like beef.

I had that happen last week of two of my cochins. From my experience I would agree with the racoon assumption. I used to like those darn things then I had to clean up 35 torn up chicken and turkey carcasses, now I shot on site.

Evening everyone!! I know it has been a long time, see that there are lots of new people, and welcome to them!!! We have been doing alot around the house and I have downsized my flocks, I have cochins, silkies, barred rocks and Light Brahmas. Well I hope everyone is well, and if anyone talks to Stimps wife tell her prayer are going their way!!

Hi guys, just introducing myself. Some of you may know my DH, "bfrancis", who is busy with the Army and leaving me to handle our bird collection with our 2 y.o. "helper". I've met a few of you guys and am sure that I will end up meeting more at various auctions and whatnot. I'm just hoping that I can keep everything kicking until DH gets back and builds some more coops.
