Okies in the BYC The Original

My self feeder has worked great if you build one like it don't make the mistake I did and use a steel belted tire LOL I had a time cutting the holed in it and with the wires that were exposed I cut up a old cheap water hose and siliconed the pieces around the holes to protect the chickies,

A couple years ago I aquired one of those orange traffic cones (not from the roadside btw :) ) I was going to screw it to the top of it to keep the chickens from getting on the top of it but I guess someone needed it more than I did I don't own it anymore, at least they didn't need a chicken feeder also.

I just bought a couple more cheap trash cans from walmart and I have collected a number of old tires in fair shape and if anyone was interested I could build them one not sure what they might be worth as far as selling them but I'm sure we could come up with a resonable price or a good trade maybe.

Building one is actually pretty easy all you need it a hole saw or a way to cut the bottom of the can for feed to come out and a sawsall or jigsaw for the tire (thats the hardest part) a handfull of screws and some silicone.

I am dreading going out to work in this heat again today it's supposed to be hotter today, If you guys have to be out in it please be careful your chickies need you :)

Just a thanks to everyone that came out yesterday to the sale.
I know it was hot. We tried to get through it as fast as we could. But thanks for the support!
I enjoyed visiting with everyone their.

Michael, If you still have that other NN Rooster, let me know. I might could pick him up sometime this week!
I tried to catch you before you left, but didnt.

Thanks to Maribeth, I went over my budget last night on the Most Beautiful guy you have ever seen.

NOTE:

Doc made it to Kuwait. His phone doesnt work at all. I even purchased a special calling plan for him. But
They say it is stuck on a tower in Ireland, so until it picks up on a new tower for the new country he is in,
it wont work....

Fill an old ice chest with some ice and cool water and take bird baths drink lots of gatoraid and if your a redneck just steal your chickens vitamins and electrolytes they won't mind. also remember all of you that are building things. if it fails use the redneck code. (gorrilla glue and duct tape.)

That is a really cool and easy to make chick pen. I sure am not going to pay $5+ for instructions though, since I figured out exactly what I need by looking at the picture for 3 minutes (Had to count the corners and pieces of pvc you would need. There are a few connectors that maybe hard to find but a plumbing store would probably have them. The only thing is you would need to have several hatches to be able to gain access to all the areas because chickens maybe stupid but they have an uncanny knack of knowing where to go so you can not reach them.

Oh yes, I definietly wouldn't buy the plans...I was posting it for the sheer purpose of idea stealing! Vern and I have never needed plans for things like that, we just need a few decent pics and we are good to go! I too would put in more access hatches to make it easier to feed, water and catch 'em if needed. I just thought it looked like a good size and PVC is so inexpensive and easy to work with.

That's hilarious that someone is actually trying to sell them, since you can get the exact plans here for free...

ETA:
The plans also tell you which joint pieces you need and where you can special order them. Most of the folks who use this plan in the meat bird section of BYC don't see the point of that little square feeder holder in the middle.

Personally I'm more comfortable working with wood, although I may try these out one of these days.

Hi, Peaches. I missed everyone at the sale, too.

I couldn't justify getting away, though. Just too much company and way too much to do. Will make it to the end of the month sale, though. I have a Muscovie drake and a bunch of Dark Cornish chicks to unload, plus a few mutts I'm considering letting go since I need to make room for my meat birds. Also a bunch of ducks that seem to have homesteaded on my place.

Will Doc occasionally get access to a computer over there? Sure would be nice if he could jump in and say hey every now and then. Tell him we miss him and are thinking about him.

Trying to decide if I should go back out and do more yard work today, yesterday was brutal I even wore a long sleeve shirt to keep from getting eatin alive by the sceeeters, or perhaps just sit back and relax a bit, but I could always fire up the BBQ and do that. My big side by side fridge/freezer is on the fritze I think it's the compressor, and am wondering if it's worth it to call someone out or just buy a new one.......

Peaches, I was trying to prevent you from going over your budget, by buying that gorgeous rooster for myself. That's my story and I am sticking to it.

Is there another NN roo out there that is a gorgeous as the one you acquired last night? I really like those saddle feathers. If you would just get all the NN roos you need, then I can bid on them in the future without feeling a guilty for bidding against someone I really like on something I really do NOT need - but would really LIKE to have.

I have been very careful as of late but dang I have so much to do these day's, and yes your advice is good and provides a great excuse to do nothing LOL.
