congratulations on the newly laying hens! If they are laying now, they should lay all winter if you give them sufficient artificial light when the days get shorter. As to your rooster, at least he won't be trying to threaten/flog you as long as he perceives that you are the head roo.

Yeah, I've got a lamp in there on a timer. I'll change out the fluorescent bulb for a warmer incandescent when it starts getting colder.

I'm not sure how I feel about being the head roo just yet. With DH on his way overseas, I've had to take over his responsibilities (such as remembering to get the trash to the road before the truck comes to get it) and our boy tries as hard to help as a 2yo can, so I suppose a certain amount of "manning up" is required. As long as the chickens know who's the boss, we might be able to make it after all.

Kwartel - this will be a tough year and you will learn a lot about yourself and how much you can figure out on your own.

Just be sure to get the trash put out before the trash pickup on the days when the trash is particulary nasty and you can probably forget a few times without too big of a fly problem - and once it gets cold, the trash won't smell as bad if it is overdue for dumping nor will there be as many flies.

Great Macy shot at a few dove but they wer to far of she has a 410 an its geting hard to get shell's around hear it look's like we need to get together some time on the weekin a go hunting we may not get any but we would have fun..

My husband just got a 410 and agrees that the shells are HIGH! He recomends a Remington 870 - cheap shells and very dependable, and no kick.

That sound like wat she need's im sure it would reach out alot further,

Today was the first time in couple of weeks that I've managed to get the trash out on time, a major victory since I've been pretty scatter-brained lately. I've had to stick to the "to-do" lists I make in my daily planner, otherwise nothing gets done, and I don't remember what needs my attention until its late and I'm too exhausted to do it. I've got some big plans to get out and do some work around the place, but I'm waiting for all the snakes to go to sleep for the winter. Apparently, in addition to the copperheads that I keep finding, we've got pygmy rattlesnakes in the area that have bitten two people, including a down-the-road neighbor. Clearing out the greenhouse and moving the wood piles can wait for awhile. I've got plenty to keep me busy in the house and inside the coops and pens anyway.

Yeah Only about ten miles north of Anlters.
Did the twisters get close to you today? I saw a big red glob on the map and that they were in your area.

If I ever came across one big enough and made a clean kill I would probably try to figure out how to process it just to try it. With the ones we've dispatched so far the neighbor's cats have been feasting. I hate catching snakes in the yard because it gives me the creeps for the next several days. I end up eyeballing every stick and pile of leaves that I have to walk past on my way to the coops. With the amount of trees we have, that's a lot of looking.

A couple of years ago, while I was busy fighting with the computer, I heard the cats playing with something on the wood floor in the dining room. I thought they sure were having fun with one of their toys. When I finally went to see, it was a 18 inch long black and red snake. I don't know what the dangerous snakes look like. In Michigan we don't have any except Timber Rattlers, and those are ovbious.
The cats were just sitting there by it like lions. They nearly played with it to death. I took it outside and finished it off. I still don't know how it got in. Our house is pretty air tight.
