Carla, I understand about the eggs and chicks, those are the only things I like to buy, too.
The auction barn belongs to John Teel (the auctioneer), and it is also his storage barn from left-over stuff from antique auctions and the like. Yes, it is pretty dark and dirty, that would be helped if they could do it during the day!
A lot of the stuff outside is pens for larger animals that people bring, or stuff that was sold earlier and just hasn't been taken home yet.
It sounds like there were more chicks there than usual, but it is always hard to look at them, because there are just so many!
I have seen plenty of sickly chickens there, but never a dead one! That's nasty!
If you think that was cheep on the goats, you should have seen the registered dog (w/ papers and everything) that went for $5

!! Dad said, "Those people will pay $15 for a Maran chick, but not even $10 for a registered dog!

Gerald and I recognized several people at the Blue auction that have been to the Harrah and Cement auctions. I guess these guys must be in the poultry business full time, or at least a lot more than we are ... either that or government spys

We saw several cages of puppies there at the Blue auction. It's so sad! We didn't stay long enough to see what they sold for ... or any of the grown poultry. We left around midnight, and my head was hurting or we would have stayed longer. Gerald was getting sleepy on the drive home & even had to pull over & walk around the truck to try to wake up ... which made me decide I had to stay awake ... to watch his driving.

My new wellsummers chicks all look nice & healthy. Some appear to be several days older than others ... I'm thinking they could be up to a week difference in age. Hopefully, whoever sold them didn't just sell the rooster chicks!

We saw some egyptian fayoumi chicks at the Blue auction ... they look just like the chicks I have! Thanks Monty, for asking Troy to look at the chicks for me last Saturday, or I would never have known what they are. Oh and when Lisa, aka Critter, was getting her Phoenix chickens that she bought Saturday night, I asked the seller to look at my "Phoenix" chicks to see if he thought that was what they were ... and he said they are... so Lisa wanted them .... hopefully they are living happily ever after with Lisa now! We still have some of those at home, too.

Grace, glad you are happy to have your babies home.

I almost feel bad that I had them to start! Do you think the older one is a rooster? I think the baby one is a hen. Keep me updated!

Sounds like I should have been at the Blue auction, I want a puppy! I think we compromised on an Australian Sheperd. *ha*

:|Please add our names to the OK list. Our mailing address is Stroud. Are there any others near Stroud or Prague?

Would be glad to hear from any Ok. folks.

We have a mixture of types of chickens--started out with some barred rocks and have added a few others. Almost all of the ones we have now, 15, were hatched out by our hens. We also have about 25 guineas. We sold 15 a while back.

Does anyone have any advice for us on what to do about our banty hen that was given to us--she suddenly quit being able to walk--she is about 10 weeks old.

My husband and I grew up with chickens. Now that we are retired we moved to the country 4 years ago and started raising a few chickens, guineas, llamas, donkeys, and horses.

Welcome to the board, glad you made it!

Do her legs look funny? Does she get around at all??

Make sure you make a post about this under the 'Emergencies/Diseases/Injuries and Cure' topic, so everyone can see what's up with your little hen.

There is no obvious sign of injury. I did post on the Emergency...site and got a few replies. The last one saying it most likely is Marecks or however you spell that word. I don't think it is that---but I don't have any experience with that disease. She seems happy and flaps and hops all around the cage eating her food. The local vet suggested putting vitamins in her water. I bought them yesterday evening and will put them in her water this morning.

That's so cool/weird! I never even thought about that!

Carolyn&Ron,

. I will checkout your other thread when I get a chance, and see if I have any advise

Cammie, don't "feel bad about having them to start"! That is the very last thought that comes to mind! You did a wonderful job raising them, besides the fact that they are perfectly tame

I think they are both girls. At least if they are, I will have 3 hens and 1 rooster, so I can keep them all

Gerald and I are still thinking we'll go the the Monroe Auction on Friday night, although when I googled the map on how to get there ... it shows that it takes almost 4 hours to get there
ep.gif
We sure don't need to buy anything ... but it's the thrill of going somewhere new!

If we don't get a good night's sleep though and my headache doesn't go away ... we might change our minds about going. And, we would just hate to leave the pets overnight, so we would drive back after the auction ... and we have bourbon red turkey and some of Troy's marans chicken eggs due to hatch on Saturday! It's so hard to leave home these days!

So, if we do go to the Monroe auction .... I'm assuming Kaacres and Poultryandbees still want the things we looked for at the Blue auction .... unless I hear different.

Oh, Cammie, now it is my turn to say, "Sorry I'm late but, HAPPY BIRTHDAY"
big_smile.png
So, if I remember right, your b-day was Sunday (?) At that time I was so busy thinking about getting your/my chickens, that I didn't even think about you
