Carla, I understand about the eggs and chicks, those are the only things I like to buy, too.
The auction barn belongs to John Teel (the auctioneer), and it is also his storage barn from left-over stuff from antique auctions and the like. Yes, it is pretty dark and dirty, that would be helped if they could do it during the day!
A lot of the stuff outside is pens for larger animals that people bring, or stuff that was sold earlier and just hasn't been taken home yet.
It sounds like there were more chicks there than usual, but it is always hard to look at them, because there are just so many!
I have seen plenty of sickly chickens there, but never a dead one! That's nasty!
If you think that was cheep on the goats, you should have seen the registered dog (w/ papers and everything) that went for $5
