I picked them (cochins) because I wanted Bantams but not flighty birds or ornery roosters. I am happy with my choice. They seem to be very friendly and I love their fluffy cushes and feathered feet. Plus they come in so many colors. As far a a favorite color? - it depends on what ever bird I am looking at at the time.

I have one that the lady who sold me the eggs told me would be a copper maran...looks like an EE to me and another lady told me it was an OE...anyway that's Gertrude, attitude, but a good lap chicken for me and my daughter...hates everyone else. Then we have Punkin...the true EE, she is the sweetest natured pet I have ever owned and has become the new baby of the family...so I have to say based on my limited experience..EE's for me.

I started out with guinea fowl to eat the ticks after my daughter had Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever from a tick bite. The friend who gave me the guineas tried for several years to give me bantam chickens, but I resisted at first. Then I accepted three or four mixed birds, and soon branched out to more, especially Cochins. I ended up really liking silkies after getting one accidently from Atwoods (didn't look at its feet and thought it was a blue Cochin). Silkies are BROODY!!! I also kept two varieties of OEGBs.

I like all the colors, but tend to work on the more unusual ones. I'm really working on lavender (self blue) silkies and showgirls and porcelains. Also have blacks, blues, partridges, splashes and grays.

Showgirl is currently the name for both female and male because the originator called them that. Some of the judges will cross "Showgirl Silkie" out and pencil in "Naked Neck Silkie." Some feel sure when they are accepted into the standard, it will be as "Naked Neck Silkies," but who knows? It'll probably be some years before that happens anyway.

Do not know why I like the Cochins. I prefer the standard or large breeds, Blue is my favorite color. I also like the Brahma breed also.

Donnie, I am glad to see you made it home alright! I am so sorry I wasn't ready when you got here but considering it worked out well!!

I can't wait to show my floors off, might just have to have a small POOPS for us folks in the NE part of the state!

I seem to like colorful birds, some of my favorit are multicolored mutts or EE's with alot of color but I also like the deep rich colors of RIR too, I guess I like them all too!

thanks you for the compliment on the house, I now have one red wall! this weekend I plan to get alot of stuff painted!

1. I haven't decided my favorite color yet. The blues and lavendars are pretty, but I haven't seen any in person yet. I like the way blacks reflect lots of different colors. I love my buffs and I love the barred and all b/w patterns.

2. I only have one cochin. He's a bantam barred and he is my fave chicken of all. I thought chicken diapers were ridiculous until I got Kevin, now I'm considering it. He is so sweet and so smart. Today I was giving them some cheese that tasted a little "off" so I needed it out of the fridge. Anyway, I gave him a piece and someone stole it. So I gave him another and he took off with it and got behind a hay bale where he sat and ate it. Did the others notice? Nope, he outsmarted them.

3. (I added #3) Are your Buff Orpington's snobby? Mine are. They are a select group. The roo and his harem of 5 hens, 4 BO and 1 RIR. Only 1 hen has been with him long term, but he immediately bonded with the others and they are clearly his girls. They can usually be seen together in a side pasture away from the rest of the flock. I love watching them and they are so soft and fluffy. Definitely some of my faves, but a little stuck up? I think so.

Sorry to hear you are under the weather. So a cat was driving by your fenceline? Gotta love typos. Mine usually get me in trouble. Typos not cats, I don't own any cats.
I have not had much trouble with regular cats but the bigger ones named Bob have done some damage.
Don't know why they go after the buff ones, maybe because they already have that golden roasted color.
Michael told me he might have a rooster for you but I stiil don't know what kind you are wanting.

Hey look ya'll - Monty needs a cat!

My favorite colors in chickens are pumpkin, gold, wheaten-based plumage (cubalaya coloures), spangled, white

I've always liked cochins because they're so fluffy and easy going. I've had good experiences with them, being good broodies. I'll get more when I graduate and have more time to devote to my birds. They require lots of protection, which is their only drawback.
