Just got word that self blue (lavender) silkies are now accepted into the standards for APA. ABA acceptance is expected in early spring--all the work has been done. So, if you're showing self blue silkies in an APA show, they are no longer "All Other Variety." Several people have worked VERY hard for several years to get this accomplished.

See good thoughts I was thinking smaller pens starting out & moving to larger pens, if all pens are the same size then you only move the sign I would need to decide how many a pen would hold at the largest so I could decide on hatching numbers.

Im good...... We like rotating them, it gives us a chance to clean the brooders weekly and if neccessary sterilize weekly. We have had better growing chicks and nothing sick. It has made life so much easier. When they first hatch we keep them in a tote in the house under a heat lamp for a day while we clean brooders and move birds. This gives us a chance to see if there are any weak chicks or leg problems, etc. We also have a white board labeled with brooder and cage numbers then labeled with breeds. this way I know what I have at what age, how many, and where they are at. Life works much easier since we started doing this at the beginning of this year.

My set-up will be very similar, I know you have seen how my breeder pen's are set-up, they are 6'x16' and I am going to take the wire wall down from the middle and make 1 large pen from 2 regular ones. Then build 10 large Brooders along the walls & backside. Then I can just go to filling them and leave them there until time to move them to the big grow out pen's. Of course I do cull pretty heavy at various stages so Numbers shouldn't be that big a deal for me.

We have A frame breeding pens that I planed on modifying some. My pens are 3 foot tall 6 foot wide at the base and 12 foot long. 4 foot of the length is covered and 8 foot is run area. I would like to make 8 foot long pens with 4 foot covered and 4 foot run. That should house just about anything. If you are only putting one week of hatch at a time in there it isnt that many birds. Also it would give me a chance to rig lights to each one to put heat in there for winter, and since they will have a small door way opening should maintain alot of the heat as well as block almost all wind.

I am thinking that I may use one of my pens that I already have to make the brooding pens, it is the very first pen we ever made & there is nothing good about it. The top is really getting in bad shape so I will work with that area in my mind. You may have just gave me something to work with except I am thinking hoops since I may have access to that material free.
