Hello everyone!

Those of you lighting the area to get your hens to start laying: The light has to be bright enough to prevent darkened areas. You need to prevent as many of these darkend areas as possible or having pens set up so the hens can look out into the dark. The reason for this is that the light must reach their retina in order to cause the brain to stimulate the hormones causing them to lay. It doesn't take a spotlight for this. Depending on the size of the area a 60w bulb should work. In a 16x16 I would personally feel better with two regular light bulbs about 6-8 feet from opposing corners. I would start with 60s and if that doesn't get'em going in a couple of weeks then maybe 75s would work. 100 watt will work for sure but the 60s should be good enough.

Remember they only need a total of 12-16 hours of light, including the natural sunlight. Get a timer and start with 12 and after the first week increase the light 1-2 hours each week until you they start laying. After that you can decide if you want to increase the time closer to 16 hours. We use 14 hours of light ecxept for the hens in the horse barn, they get 17 hours.

ashester - thanks for the explanation about the light. I think I need to make some adjustment to the light in my hen coop and point it at the hens on the roost rather than have it pointed at the wall an reflected back into the coop. My hens were sure stingy about laying eggs yesterday. This may the weekend to worm them if 30 hens aren't going to lay more than 6 eggs a day.
