Thanks - I am goint to print out this information and take it with me to Home Depot and start reading labels. My concern with adding a higher wattage Edison bulb to the flight pen has been the higher wattage of electricity to operate it. That shed was wired by the former owner and probably needs to be redone by my electrician son so that I can have lights on both sides of the divided shed.

Most people buy the 2700 kelvin, they are the cheapest and they put out a dull yellow light, not very bright. then there is the next one up that puts out a perfect light for in the house. The next is the 6500 kelvin, i believe, it puts out a bright bluish light. It is suppose to be the closest to natural light. Thats what we have in our pens.

I am going to determine the length of the bulbs in the rabbit barn and get some to replace those as well. With this cold weather, my florescents don't want to shine very brightly out there, which may be one element of my rabbit breeding difficulties. The lights in the chicken pens are just edison based bulbs, but maybe I can persuade my son (or Dean) to put in florescents after this cold spell passes. No sense in feeding chickens that don't produce eggs, when there is a way to encourage egg production that doesn't involve showing them an axe and frying pan, followed by loud threats.

Gerald & I intend to go to the Blanchard auction, but could be late since he has an MRI scheduled at 3 pm today in OKC.

Our chickens haven't stopped laying ... we even have a few turkeys still laying ... and a black shoulder peahen laid an egg yesterday

Hope to have a bunch of eggs there at the auction if I can get everything done in time.

I am so excited that you will be at Blanchard. It has been way too long since we have heard from you and I was planning to send you and email this weekend to ask if everything was okay with you guys. Any thing you can think of that might be different from what the rest of us do, to keep everything laying? How often do you worm your birds?

Also, what is the name of the company you like to order rubber water bowls from? Randall Burkey has $4.99 shipping for your entire order, regardless of how small or large it is, until January 17. I am shopping prices on meds and rubber water bowls to see if better deals are available elsewhere - even if I have to pay shipping.

Maribeth, You can use the little spiral CFLs at 5000 or 6500 k where you have normal light bulbs that is what we use for those fixtures
they make the 4ft and 8ft florescents in the 5000 kelvin and 6500 kelvin as well. You can get them in the 40 watt bulb but will appear to put out 2-3 x the amount of light. The 5000 k is noted as office space commercial use, the 6500 is "daylight bright" they are a little higher but well worth the extra $$ they last longer too.

Americanlivestock.com is where I buy most of my supplies. They have free shipping if your purchase is over $75 and they usually have great prices on rubber feed tubs of all sizes.

I don't know what we're doing to keep these birds laying ... mistreating them, I guess,

We even have a bunch of fainting goats popping out babies this week ... total of 6 babies as of this morning. It must be our well water ...

Gerald has shoulder trouble ... too many years as a sheet metal mechanic on airplanes.
