Sorry to hear that. Yeah, we have to rebuild that one hutch we got recently too. The sides were built with particle board instead of plywood, and something (probably a dog) ate a hole through it. Also the wire sides were chicken wire ... not strong enough to keep a determined predator out. Too bad I didn't realize that before we put the rabbits in.

Bricker, the Chupps auction was quite an experience. Gerald definitely wants to go again and spend the entire day there. I would recommend all Okies go there at least once, if they can. If only we had prepared more, we would have had a more enjoyable experience. It rained there almost all day long, so we should have been prepared better for that, although I luckily had a raincoat with me. Also, Gerald and I had hoped to be able to be at different areas of the auction, since there are 4 or 5 auctioneers going at the same time in different locations. Unfortunately, my cell phone was "out of area" and wouldn't work for him to call me when he thought I might want to buy something. We need to bring our walkie-talkies next time! Oh, and we left immediately after the poultry sold, because we wanted to go to the Cement auction that evening, but it would have been nice to stay longer and buy some produce and baked goods. They have an area where locals sell their goods, and there are lots of breads and sweets that the local Amish people make. We did buy some cookies from them and they were DELICIOUS!

Here's what Jimd said about the Chupps Auction on the Oklahoma Auctions thread

Carla, I'm glad you and Gerald had a good time. Sue and I went there for the first time several years ago. It rained so hard that day. I don't think I have ever been so soaked. We didn't have raincoats.

Some things sell for almost new price, but other things are dirt cheap. Guess it depends on who is there and how many want that item.

I get more for the poultry I sell there, but it is a hassle coming up with cages or containers.

At the Durant sale, do you have to provide your own cages, and do they sell with the poultry? You have been to both, which would you recommend to sell six month old RIR roosters?

I'm not Carla, but I have been to this auction enough times to answer your question

If you are selling birds you can:
A: bring your own cage and take it home with you after the birds sell
B: bring your own age and sell it with the birds
C: use a cage from their pile of old ones

If you are buying birds you can:
A: bring your own cage
B: buy a cage there
C: ask for one of their old ones for free (or cheap)

Bad news and Good News

Bad News sister volunteered to keep kids overnight and I thought of all kinds of things I could get done without a 2 year old and a 5 year old trying to give me a heart attack. So hubbie came home from work and I started on the new rabbit hutch, and it started raining (this is the bad news) just a light rain and it was kinda nice but power tools and rain do not mix. So I decide to go check what is left in the garden a few pumpkins and the cucumbers. I have had the garden in for 4 months now and never had anything lost to wild rabbit but today there was on overripe cuc that was chewed on by sumbunny(good news I hope), sure hope its the boys hanging out and trying to figure out what to do to catch em. Thinking about moving the duck out of the kenel and putting my doe in there in a cage and some goodies and watching, have thought about a trap but afraid it may hurt them but if I do not catch them the local dogs will if they travel to far. ANY ideas?

Yes, GracefulBantams has great advice.

As for which auction to take roosters to, I found that the prices were highest at both auction during the first half of the sale, but by the end of the auction birds, especially roosters sell for practically nothing. If at all possible, take your birds in as soon as the auction house will accept them, since they sell in the order they are received. Also mark the cage with their breed and age, and any other important info that might help sell the bird. You never know when a new to poultry buyer will come to an auction and be swayed by the info that you provide. I still am clueless on many poultry breeds, especially when some look so similar to others. If I knew for certain the breed and age, I would buy that bird over another in a cage with no info.

If you could make it to the Blanchard auction this coming Saturday, I would recommend it over all others for selling your birds. We had the greatest financial success in selling at their auction (although it was at Newcastle last month). We'll certainly be there this weekend with some bunnies, roosters, chicks, etc. I hope to fill our truck & trailer full of critters & cages we don't need.

luvzmybabz, I hope you find your wayward bunnies.

nnbreeder, I agree ... those guys sure do love to chew on wood!

OK I decided to do my winter prep on the amount of birds I have so will be taking some to Blanchard on Saturday. Just haven't decided on a few yet cause I think they would sell better elsewhere ( Buttercups) I have 1 pair to sell can't decide if I wanna sell them or not I am keeping a trio for now. But as of Satuday night my mini farm will be minus at least 10 Birds ( I must I must).

Sunday I am making my trip to pick up my goats YEAH!!!!!!! I really should be out working on the goat pen and the rabbit hutch but it's pretty damp out there and I am never happy with the weather either 2 HOT or 2 COLD, why does Oklahoma no longer have sping and fall I remember them sometimes from my chidhood. Even with the summer not being that bad.

LOL...Okies are just that way. I've been all over the place and I don't think I've found people to be any more friendly or helpful than folks in Oklahoma.
