Also, if the vent of the hen is wrinkly & dried up looking she's probably not going to be laying eggs for you. Young hens have a smooth appearing vent that is slightly moist, combs & wattles turn bright red at lay, and they gain a "petticoat" of feathers from their legs to their tail.

Older hens sometimes will get gnarly feet that looks like it's scaley mite, but is not.

Someone once asked how to tell age in a hen & thats the crux of what I know.

spreading hate and discontent

kittens you say..calicos you say....I am still in need of a couple for my pens to help keep the mouse population undercontrol

Howdy Cuban! You gonna want me to bring some game type birds to POOPS? Cuz I am! Got both oriental style and American style. Wish it was a little further off that way I could really start picking them over. Why can't they grow faster or have little tags that say I am gonna be great when I get older?

What are you doing on your extra day off? I know, I know working! You have a lot of nerve to tell Al to take it easy.

I am originally from Iowa and my brothers keep asking to come down here for Hog and Turkey hunting, Know of any good areas?

I thought you had real birds? You know game birds, and you have a mouse problem in the pens? Are the birds full? Mine will fight over a mouse... and they are little.

She came out of my friends 1 year old coop so she should be pretty young...we will see.

Ok...So I need to dig around in the feathers and find the vent and stick two fingers between the pelvic bones. Didn't realize in getting chickens that I would have to become a Chicken gynecologist!

Seriously though, this is good info...keep it coming.

if they had the little tags it would save too much feed, Purina worked hard back in the 19th century to eliminate the quality tags the chicks hatched with so they could sell more feed. Now for the rest of the story
