no luck to it, look up jagdterriers...they are a 15-20lb dogs that are used on hogs, bear and mt lions....

GotGame, I'm not downing your dogs and I know what jagds are capable of. You have to keep more than one for them to be effective at taking down large game. The yotes around here are huge animals and they don't often travel alone. So terriers, smallish to medium dogs, aren't going to cut it unless you want to keep a pack of them.

what are jagdterriers?
i am going to work with those big dump dogs of ours and see if i can teach them to stay on the property away from the neighbors cows, and my birds- the black one has got out a few times and not bothered anything so i think the female is the instigator

off for my second cup, be back in a bit

Do you have chicks for sale? I will be in town until Monday and staying in a hotel. If you had something available on monday when I am headed home I would be interested.

If you acquire birds, you can leave them at my house in SE OKC and pick them up on your way out of town on Monday. Just an offer.

Maribeth - you are one of the people I aspire to be like. You are so generous, kind, helpful (enabler!) and knowledgeable. I am so glad you are an Okie and I am blessed to know you (even if it is mostly on the internet)!

Robin, I think you are smart to try this with the dogs you have. If you have the time to commit to training them, if they don't have too much of a prey drive, and if they are well fed and exercised it can be done. If things work out, you will probably get territory-protecting dogs that ignore the birds. Here are a couple of tips on how I did this with my high-prey drive Jack Russell Terrier.

1. Work with one dog at a time at first. Keep dog on a short leash and sit out amongst the chickens.
2. Every time the dog even LOOKS at a bird, make a "huh-uh" noise and tug on the leash slightly to get his attention OFF THE BIRD and back on you.
3. Give him a small treat (just a tiny bit to taste is plenty) when the dog's attention on back on you and is not on the chickens.
4. Continue working this way until you can lengthen the leash and the dog can be further from you, and finally off the leash all together.
5. Once you are confident the dog is not interested in the chickens, try leaving him with them for short periods while you are watching from the house or from somewhere the dog can't see you. If you are not in the yard and the dog shows interest in the chickens, call to him from the house. You want him to think you can see him are even if he can't see you.
6. Ramp it up a bit by having Dave do something to make the chickens run around and sqawk. I would pick up my chickens and they would flap their wings. When the dog paid attention to them, I would repeat the corrections so that now he doesn't even look at a squawking, running chicken.

Two dogs together in the yard will be harder than one. Their instinct to play together will kick in and dogs in a pack often behave very differently from single dogs.

Cuban is right about the coyotes - they will lure dogs - even big dogs - away from the safety of the yard and then several yotes will gang up on the dog and kill it. When I take my little dog out to my parent's in the Panhandle, I put him in the kennel at night.

My poor terrier has been flogged by hens and he just puts his head down and turns away from them. He doesn't guard the chickens, but he still barks and chases squirrels and he keeps the raccoons, foxes and possums away when he is in the yard. To get Titus to look at this Silkie chick with interest for this photo, I had to put a treat next to the dish the chick is in. He is trained NOT to focus on the birds - when a dog looks at anything intently with ears up, it's a warning sign that he is too interested and about to investigate further.

I just looked them up http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jagdterrier and they do seem to be a great dog for hunting predator animals. It looks like they're great hunting wild boar, racoon, badger, fox, etc. I wonder how they'd be around livestock?

morning guys , looks like the sun is going to be out today woo hoo , gotta go and take more pictures of the ameraucana eggs so i can get more examples of the actual egg color instead of the one in the dark with a camera flash

Brrr The cold did follow the storms here! I went out to load the sale stuff and liked to have froze. Still windy and misty too,not a fun outside day!
Oh well I'm going to an inside sale so the day will be fun anyway.
Great bit about training dogs City. It helps if they are around them everyday too. My Tacos have learned pretty good, although Izzy still likes to run up to a coop and try and scare them.most have gotten used to her and just stand their ground and peck at her! I have had a harder time dealing with the neighbors Taco though, she is sneaky and wants to wait till I'm not looking.she is getting better but still don't trust her 100per cent.

Your also right about P&B! Mereibeth you are our greatest envoy! always a help and never a cross or challenging word. A true
Okie blue blood!
